I have been setting up my tank for the last 2 weeks and am looking to slowly add some fish. My tank is a 20g tall / square. Being fairly new to the whole tropical thing I am not too sure on how many fish and what types can all live happily together... this is where your help is required!!!

I can say that I like the looks of these guys...
Angels
Opaline gourami
rams
rainbow fish
I guess colourful sums it up.

Please suggest quantities that waould suit my tank as well as best combinations, and really I am up for any advice.

Thanks in advance

Unfortunately 20 gallon tall tanks do put some limitations on what you can have because of size.

Angels - Really should be in a 30-40+ gallon tall. They get a lot bigger than most people think.
Rainbows - Many species can be rather active, and get to be 4+ inches in length...so a 3 ft minimum is desired.
Opaline Gourami - Grows to be 5-6 inches in size, and can be aggressive towards other fish.

As a beginner you may want to go with Bolivian Rams which are not as colorful, but are hardier than German Rams. German Rams can be a bit delicate depending on the stock, and really do seem to require soft, acidic water to be at best coloration.

There are actually quite a few colorful and hardy choices out there suitable for a 20 gallon however. Lemon tetras, Harlequin Rasboras, and several livebearers can be quite colorful if the water quality is kept up.

That tank is too small to house rainbows on a long term basis. They need at least 36 inches of horizontal space like Phoenix stated.

i would say a pair of rams...then 2 or 3 corys. look at the stock for my 20 gallon in my sig. the raphael cat is being taken out but right now hes 1 inch. ive ahd the tank for a long time. if you have the pair of rams and some corys...you could pry add 1 small species of pleco and a few white clouds or neons. make sure you have good filtration to cause less problems down the road.

How about a pair of Dwarf Cichlids, some Tetras and maybe a small Pleco!
