We have a tropical tank with:

7 neon tetra's
1 dwarf gourami
3 platy's
1 angel fish
1 silver shark
4 danio's (not entirely sure they are danio's, we have forgotten their name)

We also had 2 more platy's until the last few days when 1 platy was found dead and seemed to be stuck to the filter and another was seen struggling yesterday and we noticed its tail fin had been bitten right down, then we found it dead this morning...

We have also today spotted 1 of the danio's with a red mark on its underneath and its bottom fin appears to have been nipped...we are convinced it is the silver shark as except for the gourami none of the other fish seem big enough to do any damage as they are all quite small

Any opinions??

How big is your tank? Silver sharks need massive tanks to be happy or they'll go take bites out of anything that bugs them.

We have a 32 gallon tank, we didi ask the man in the aqurium shop before we bought it and he advised us it would be okay...

we have also just noticed a larger (2.5cm) tuxedo platy trying to nip the gourami, we have separated the silver shark and now unsure as to whether it was him after seeing the platy try and attack the gourami

Could be the angel or the shark, or anything else that is unhappy. As mentioned sharks will need a huge tank and need to be in shoals, the shop have given you bad advice in order to get money off of you. You really should not keep a gourami and angel together either, especially in a tank that size.

Well a 32 Gallon tank is still to small for a silver shark sadly, They prefer being in packs of 6 or even more. Silver sharks are known to getting lonely and again, if it's in a small tank and by itself it will attack other fish.

For a shark it's [background=rgb(238, 246, 255)]Minimum Tank Volume: 900 litres of course thats mad but thats what some sites say.[/background]

the angel seems to be okay, but we have witnessed the shark trying to nip a few so we are assuming it is him and if you are not supposed to keep a gourami with an angel and a shark then maybe we need to get rid of them and just stick with guppy's, platys and tetra's...

how many would you recommend for this size tank??

The tank size is okay for the few fish you have, But take the shark back to the LFS.
