Yes, its a wall. I made it from foam to separate the plant substrate from the sand area.

Java fern would be the plant

Makes me think I should put my java ferns in the shade a bit more as they look brown and have dots on them

That's normal with Java Fern, when they reproduce the black spots which appear on the leaves will eventually develop into new plants.

This tank is actually well lit, they are loving the extra lighting, plenty of pups on the plants, and no brown areas.
