1st Marine Tank

I would drill a hole at the water-line for the new pipe, such that if the pump fails e.t.c. the hole sucks in air, killing the syphen as it forms. The only way that can fail, is if the hole gets blocked, which should be un-likely :good: To be doubly safe, you could use both systems together

This is a good idea and very simple. :good:

Thanks again Rabbut - your advice is always really helpful.

if i were you i would add some more flow to the display tank. other than that it looks like a nice start to me

theres a few. I like a few different colours and like a small group of something. The above wouldnt all work together though so you would have to chose a few. Its good site for ideas, have a shop around.
Im looking for the wrasse in the first link at the minute

I will take a look at them links now.

Live rock should be delivered today.

Here are a few test results before the live rock.

Salinity - 1.024
PH - 8.5
Ammonia - 1.2
Nitrate - 10
Nitrite - 0.3
Temp - 27.1

The Ammonia and PH are a bit high.

Interesting, where has the ammonia, nitrite and nitrate come from? You using RO or tap water? If you are using tap water, you will need to be careful about waterchanges with that much ammonia present (Check the tap water stats if applicable) If you are using RO, are those the stats that it leaves the unit with? If so, the RO unit is faulty  If it is just from mank in the sand ETC, I would not worry too much, ammonia and nitrite should spike higher than those levels during curing once live rock goes in

All the best

I did use RO water, but it was the first time I have used it so might have not got the settings right. As there was nothing in the tank I didn't test the water at the time (will do this for water changes)

I did get some of the sand and rock from another tank (not my tank) so this might be where it came from.

Still no live rock atm - dam UPS!

Just to check, you did run the use to waste for a couple of hours before you started using it diden't you? RO manufacturers add resin to their membranes to keep them wet in transit (if they dry out they are scrap) and you need to flush it off before use. This is done by running the use to waste for a couple of hours ;) If you did not do that, some resin will now be in your tank, and that may explain the readings. I think the resin may be toxic, so if you diden't flush it off, I'd advise as larger waterchange as you can manage before you get your rock :good:

Has it shipped? If so, it will be nearly dead rock, not matured live rock, when it gets to you

With it being a used unit, I am going to ask a stupid question; Did the membrane stay wet at all times since after it's last use, and how can you be shure?

All the best

Thanks for teh concern Rabbut, but I am getting a new batch of Live rock from the supplier.

Guess I can not be sure, but the guy seamed trustworthy.

Also - what timings do you use for lighting? i.e how long on blue and white lights?

Thanks

Iain

I only have a hailde, and it runds for 10 hours :good:

I'd personally replace the filters in the unit if you cannot be shure that it was kept wet, or at least let it bleed to waste for half an hour before testing the output TDS and stats for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, phosphate and silicates where possible. You would expect zeros for everything but TDS, that should be <5 :good: If you cannot test all those, replace anyway, assuming that the membrane is haggered, or if the results are not as expected

All the best
