not necessarily smaller fish. It's more like most any fish haha. No in all seriousness it depends on the fish. I have heard of large community tanks with single male betta's that worked out fine. I would not recommend this ofcourse. Generally white cloud mountain minnows snails african dwarf frogs are considered good tank mates for a betta. Keep in mind some betta's just prefer to be alone so prepare to take any fish back or rehome them should things go south fast.
