Hello Forums! I'm brand new here and made this account because I just bought a 10 gallon aquarium with an over-the-back filter and submersible heater.

I currently have 3 little zebra danios in to start my cycle, and my goal is to have 1 Gold Gourami and 1 Rainbow shark. (One pictus catfish too if it can be done)
I need legitimate advice on this. Will 10 gallons be okay for 2-3 of these fish? I need every bit of advice I can get so nothing will go wasted.

Thanks in advanced.

No. Your tank is far too small for either species. There are lots of other fish that will do well in a 10 gallon so maybe do a little research.

Really? I thought it was 1USGallon per inch of fish?
Gold Gourami = 5Inches
Rainbow Shark = 5 Inchs
Pictus Catfish = 5 inchs

So whats wrong with 2 of these fish?

Agreed its too small for all the fish you have mentioned including the danios

we usually don't recommend cycling with fish either :/ have a read through THIS

Hi your using the inch per gallon rule which should not be taken quite so literally - for example you couldnt have 1 10 inch fish in there because it physically can not fit. Same reason for these 5 inch fish really - they may physically fit in it but the size of tank will make their lives miserable. They just get too big for the tank its like putting a Cat in a Cat carrier for life :/ its just not a good way of doing things. Also cramming a RBTS and a Gourami into a small tank will just result in a lot of fighting and one will die if not both - though there are many reasons why these fish would die in this tank

With the Danios, when people say the 10g is too small you have to realise that Danios are really really active and fast fish that can clear a 4 foot tank in under a second so in a small tank like yours they will be really limited for space. Think of them as the Terriers of the fish world... They have so much energy!

In a small tank you need to think small with your fish and also take into consideration their activity levels. Ideal fish for this size tank are Chilli Rasbora, Galaxy Rasbora, Pygmy Cory Catfish, Male Bettas, Ember Tetras, Pygmy Gourami and Endlers.

The fish you want to keep are better off in a tank of at least 250 liters if not 300.

Hope thats helped

The one inch per gallon rule applies only to the standard, slim bodied tropical fish that grows to less the two inches, adult size
Most 10 gallon tanks are around 2" x 12" x 12"; it's just not on to keep a fish in a tank that is only 4 times it's own length long and twice wide; it doesn't give them enough room to move about freely.

Too small for the danios? I must be missing something :/.
Danios, although they are small, are very active and need a tank at least three foot, and preferably four, in length to be able to swim at full stretch.

Suitable fish for a 10 gallon are;
guppies
Endler's
Betta (but not with guppies)
any of the micro rasboras, like mosquito or dwarf emeralds
small bodied tetras (so neons or embers, not the deep bodied ones like serpaes or phantoms)
any of the pygmy Corydoras spp, like C. pygmaeus or C. hastatus

Oh, I see Wills has already answered

You are: they are schooling fish which are very active and grow to 2". The tank is too small for them to be able to swim properly. Personally, I recommend that zebra danios are kept in tanks which are at least 3ft long. Schooling fish should be kept in groups of at least 6, or preferably 10-15+

Edit: we're slow today, fluttermoth!

Ive just got my heart set on a gourami so badly...
work with me here...what about a honey gourami? can i have that and put a few other little fish in with him?

Honey Gourami would work :) or Pygmy Gourami as well - though if you like the typical Gourami shape with the feelers then Honey would work nice :)

I know very little about stocking however you have Flutter, KK and Wills on the case so you've hit jackpot there :) I would say that the oto tend to need a goodly number (6+ as a minimum) so you might run out of space with them. Why are you thinking of them - looks or their algae eating side? If you're thinking about them for the Algae be aware that you must not add them until you are heavily infested with algae (at which point you should be asking questions about why you've got so much algae) :)

The Harlequins sound good but just be aware that Ottos are quite a weak fish and not always the best fish to add to a new tank - Pygmy Cories would be nice in there and there are 2 or 3 species to choose from - Panda Cories may also work. :)
