10 gallon community tank with a betta

actually after looking at some catfish pictures, I think I had a pictus catfish. I swear he used to swim upside down and spiral through the water though. Weird.

ok. I'll get a couple cherry barbs then. That way I don't have to get a schooling fish, and therefore 6 of them. usd catfish= upside down catfish. I wanted to get a pleco, but apparently not even a 2inch pittbull pleco will work.
I think upside down catfish are shoaling fish (at least 3) and get pretty big for a 10g.

they only get 3 inches long, 4 at the most, I don't see a problem with it. Anyone care to correct me? Maybe I could get two, or a couple ottos to keep it company. Or I could get pictus catfish instead and see if this spiraling thing is just a querky thing that whiskey did.

Maybe I should get a pittbull pleco, if the lfs carries them.

In a 10g aquarium, you should have 10-15" of fish (higher end only if you have super filtration). 2 cats will not be enough if they are shoaling fish. Your 3 cats mean your tank is filled, before you even get to any other fish (9-12"). Plus, if you were 4" long, wouldn't you want a home bigger then a crowded 10g?
:/

Ok. That answers that. I'll get a pictus then. A pictus, 2 cherry barbs, and 1 betta is not overcrowded. :p Any other cool catfish I should consider? (don't like cories). I might consider a couple of ottos instead, but I like the pictus, reminds me of old times

I have a similar decision to make with my 10 gallon. I have heard that pictus catfish can be fin nippers and attack the betta. I have heard that cherry barbs are good and so would be the ottos. It depends on whether or not the betta is mellow.

In my 30 gallon I have 1 male betta, danios, platies, and cory's.

Even though this topic has be resurrected from almost 4 years ago ... I have something to add since it's someone new with a decision to make :p

In my experience with the pictus catfish, they can be a little bit of an antagonizer, but I've never had one nip. They just sort of rush at the other fish for a second, then swim away. They can be persistent in this though. If one claims a crevasse, you better believe it's his. If you don't want your betta to be chased a bit, then I wouldn't keep a pictus with it.

A 10 gallon is too small for a Pictus, they prefer to be in groups of three or more, are quite active, and can get up to 5 inches long.

1 betta and 6 neons would be ok in a 10 Gal tank. If you could find a pitbull pleco that would be fine in your tank. They only get 2 inches They like to be in groups but will be fine on their own. I saw 2 at my local fish shop ONCE. I did not buy them that day I went back for them the next and I was too late. I begged my fish store to order me some and they never did. So I got a bristle nose instead and I love her. But they need a 30 Gal tank so thats not an option for you.

ANYWAYS... You could try your luck with some otos. They can be hard to keep alive. I started out with 6 and now I am down to 1 but he is doing awesome. Those little guys are fragile and almost always wild caught so many of them die during transport. If they live throw that they die when they get to the store. If that does not kill them the move to your tank and trying to adjust to tank life can kill them. But you could always give them a try they are ok at cleaning algea and left over food. They only get 1.5 inches maybe 2.

Good luck and try and find a Pitbull pleco. I have heard only good things about them. I really wanted some so badly oh well it was not ment to be.

Hmm..I didn't think the betta's month would be big enough..I mean half his attempts with pellets result in them getting away.

Actually bettas will quite happily manage a cherry shrimp even if they take it in bits- I know Ive seen it happen. Granted not all will be bothered to eat them some of my bettas get on with shrimp others saw it as food straight away and ate it.

Tetras are no good for a betta tank because they are tail biters but also because bettas often see their bright colours and go on the rampage! What about some cories for your tank? or some larger shrimp such as amarno - really good algae eaters!

Female Bettas usually get on a lot better with your general community fish than males so thats an idea and some females are really pretty! the one community fish Id stay away from is sword tails others might differ in opinion but they seem to be the worst for nipping/ chasing

Hope this helps

p.s a little photo evidence rights to nippyfish

agreed, its wayyyyyyyyyyy too small for pictus

Try a clown pleco, theyre normally quite tame and stay small :good:

also i wouldnt ever put a betta in with neons, neons are fin nippers and thats not good for a betta
