1 Week In And I Have A Dead Neon Already

Got 6 zebra danios, and one has died after 4 days. I thought they were hardy?

My water has been very good, always:

pH 7.6 - 7.8
Ammonia: 0
Nitrite: 0
Nitrate: <= 10ppm

I think the one that died seemed to be quite pale the night before, and his spine looked like it was curving downwards... his body wasn't straight, and he looked a bit awkward. I found one of my gouramis nipping at his body, which had been half eaten by the morning. He was almost all white, with no stripes really - is that what happens after they die?

Its quite common to receive one or more very weak fish that die when you are bringing home a group of smaller fish new from the LFS. When you are on an international forum like this you get a very large sample different circumstances: there are people that have wonderful shops where the owners are very experienced and manage to offer only very healthy fish. There are people who only have access to poorly kept shops where larger numbers of weak fish will be the only choice. And there's everything in-between. Also, even at the best shops there will be a few fish with problems mixed in.

So you will see all sorts of reports from people: some people have never lost fish, some lose fish all the time, others are in-between. Obviously people have all sorts of tanks and stocking differences too. I don't know, I guess I'm just saying that if its your first tank and experience its hard to judge, so you just have to go along and build up experience. Hopefully your remaining danios and your neons will adjust and grow and be healthy.
