1 Foot Tank

Hey all

I know that the tank is tiny, it was a starter tank I got second hand that I was using for a quarantine tank.

I have 8 neon tetra, 2 red eye tets, 2 headlight tets, 3 danio zebras and 2 sword tails and a tetra with a blank and white stripe with red fins.(about the size of a danio zebra)

My question is,

I want to give them away to my cousin because I am thinking of converting my current 63g community tank to a discus setup. Is the 1 foot tank way 2 small ??? (I know it is, gut feeling)

What size tank would u recommend ??

I personally would say no to moving anything but the neons over.

Yes, I want to know if all those fish will be ok in a 1ft tank or will it be over stocking, what size would be appropriate ??

Nope, it's not that 1 ... The tetra I am talking about has the same stripes as the Black Neon Tetra, but has a thin body like a danio zebra and red fins.


I know that it's a lot of fish for a 1ft tank, but I only ahve a spare 1ft tank. I would rather give them to my cousin than feed them 2 my oscar ... lol

Atm I really do still think that you're going to have to re-home all but the neons if they're going into a 1ft tank. For all of them it's not so much about the bioload, just about how much space they should have. For example I personally wouldn't put any danio in anything short of 30"... but definitely would advise against anything below 2ft, same goes for the others. Plus the shoaling species should really be in larger groups...

Hey all,

The fish with the red fins is definately a dwarf pencil fish !! ... Thanks for that ... It came with the 1ft tank when I bought it, so I slapped it into my 63g, at least I know what it is now ... lol


I understand what u mean now that u explained it Curiosity101, I thought the initial reason was the bioload ... sorry.

Why do u say that danios need at least 30" of space ??

Kinzo I couldn't open your link (page not found) but the fish I have definately looks like a dwarf pencil ...

Because danios are very active little fish. I've found them to be happiest in tanks of at least 30" and with the filter nozzle spraying along the length of the tank just under the suface. They like cool fast flowing water.
They are 'ok' in 2ft tanks but imo I wouldn't do it just cause I've seen how active they can be.

Hey Curiosity101,

I understand what you mean, in my 63g they never still, always darting around but I thought cause of their small size that a smaller tank would be ok.

I may not be new to fishkeeping, but I am always learning.

My own experience keeping zebras in a 6 foot long tank was that they used the whole thing and would have liked even more space. In the space of 6 feet they were always doing the breeding chase the whole length of the tank. I can't imagine them in less than a 2 foot length and suspect they would not do as well there as in a longer tank. That is not to say that I have never kept them in smaller tanks. I have kept them in a 10 gallon tank but they did not really act as well there.

Hey all ...

I would just like 2 say thank you 2 everyone who has commented here ...

Everyone seems 2 say the same thing here ... so I will give him the 2 headlight tetra's, 2 red eye tetra's and the dwarf pencil. I will get him a bigger tank (min 3ft) and then give him 1 of the zebra's to see how they react to it.
