Plants on ebay eh? What a fascinating subject!

First of all Seanie you ask about plants for a shrimp tank. All plants entering the UK are treated with pesticides to kill a whole range of nasties that would otherwise enter the UK. These are harmfull to shrimp and ornamental snails for that matter. If you'd have read the ME pages for JJC Aquatics or Last Trading Post you would have seen this detailed and you wouldn't have needed to email them. ALL plants bought from any source should be thoroughly rinsed to remove all chemical traces before adding them into your tank. Buying an assorted pack wasn't the best decision for shrimp IMHO.

Specimen plants, mosses, Riccia etc come from the same suppliers in the far east as 95% + that LFS use. You pay a massive premium for plants grown in europe. Tropica are often touted as the best, but many plants from "ebay sellers" are as good a quality at a fraction of the price. I've proven this on many occasions. Also, the specialist ebay plant sellers import directly and don't buy from a UK wharehouse were they may be sat around for a week or so before being sold to an LFS which might also have them in stock deteriorating for a few days.

The 25 plant assortments range in price from £4 - £5. If you read the details carefully most ebay sellers detail exactly what species and type (Cuttings included) of plants are supplied. Realistically they're tank fillers and appeal to the masses. Not serious aquarists who are interested in creating a perfect biotope etc.

For the record, the species offered in these packs cost between 2 and 10 pence per plant from far eastern suppliers. However, once you add freight charges, VAT, ebay listing fees, ebay final valuation fees, paypal commisions, Postage and packaging costs, allow for some stock (right off) and a whole host of incidental costs you make around £1 per pack. Oh, and that doesn't include your time. I think you have unrealistic expectations from assorted packs and would be best purchasing individual specimen plants at realistic prices.

Many of the assorted packs on ebay still offer far better value for money than LFS but be realistic about what you expect for the price of a bag of fish and chips!

You're welcome for the reply. For the record JJC Aquatics is an extension of my hobby (I am JJC Aquatics). As I said earlier mixed plant packs are nothing more than tank fillers. They do offer great value for money. Fifty plants for just £9 is value you won't find in any LFS.

What I would say is if you're unhappy with a purchase from us then get back in touch. There isn't any issue we can't resolve swiftly and easily. Flogging plants is hardly rocket science after all. Our packs are certainly not "mainly floating" though. Each pack of 25 will normaly contain 2. We sometimes throw in extras if we have a few left. Sometimes our suppliers send us more than we order and so they are passed onto the customers etc.

If you're after specific plants for a shrimp tank then it may well be worth your while contacting me directly. I'll be more than happy to make amends for the dissapointment you have endured.

I'd ask anyone considering purchasing plants online to consider the following though : -

Make sure you know what you are buying! It sounds obvious, but DO NOT go on the picture alone. Read bthe item description, ebay feedback and any details on the sellers ME page. As an example, we sell bulbs but show pictures of established plants in some of our ebay listings as a pic of a bulb isn't always very informative. This is clearly stated in the listing, but many people go on the picture alone. Dont!

Have realistic expectations. A plant pack containing 25 plants IS NOT going to contain 25 large established mother plants. It will certainly contain young specimens that need growing on and cuttings. It is simply not economically viable to supply anything else for £4 to £5.

If you have ANY DOUBTS WHATSOEVER contact the seller first with any queries you have. For example the amazon sword plants we sell vary in size between 7" and 13" from week to week. Our christmas moss on bogwood should measure 6" to 8" but occasionaly we get sent the next size up (This is bad for us as the extra shipping and postage has to be met by us and not the buyer) which have measured upto a foot across. Always ask about size and quality. The quality of plants can vary from week to week. Not hugely, but if you're in doubt ask. You'll get an honest answer.

Don't buy anything if you don't know how to care for it. You wouldn't believe how many customers spend a significant amount of money on plants from ourselves and never think to buy the correct types of ferts to go with them. If you don't feed your plants, how can you expect them to thrive?

Understand that buying online doesn't have to be as impersonal as many people seem to think it is. Try and build up a rapport with your online supplier as you would your LFS. Ask questions! It will pay dividends in the long run. Good advice and maybe the odd freebie too!

I'd be very interested to hear from others about their experiences both good and bad. And I'd be very happy to listen to suggestions for online plant sellers etc.

Please fire away.......

I,ve just bought a lot from plants alive, and the vallis has died also the lily. Then I ordered Zostererfolia which should be at least 12ins tall, it came in very small pots that I didn't even recognise it as Zostererfolia and planted it as a foreground plant. That alone cost £8!! Looked like the tips off other plants!
If you CAN afford it buy the more expensive plants, imo it's worth it in the long run. I will not make the same mistake again.

Also think about The green machine, check their site, I know they are on UKAPS, the members there use them, I will be going there in future too. Not at all happy with plants alive. If you look at the Zostererfolia from green machine it's tall, from plants alive I'm not kidding it was maybe 1.5 ins!!
