Internal Parasites - Worming Medication In The Uk

Hi Bloo, glad you had good results with the wormer :)
Thanks Anita - I think it was you who first recommended it to me (elsewhere) ages ago :good:

Sorry ted28 - didn't ignore you. Just missed your post / question! Hope Anita's info & quotes help to answer this.

Be careful when using flubenol in the uk though, the only licenced wormers available are wormer plus and flubenol 15.
Normal flubenol from the vets is not legal for aquatic use as of October this year when the small animal exemption scheme was updated.
It is now illegal to own, use, or administer ( obtain, supply, give away) ANY restricted medication unless under the direct supervision of a vet or "qualified person"...such a person will be a specialist such as a fish health advisor on a fish farm etc...
It is also illegal to use a prescribed, restricted or over the counter medication on any animal it is not approved or perscribed for. Using a pig wormer on fish is illegal, using metro prescribed for sheep on fish is illegal... and the penalties are steep. With the exception of vetinary supervision on non food animals where a degree of freedom in the choice of meds is allowed.

If you read the thread of mine (in the first link) - I bought it to treat my tank "just in case" because I lost a loach to what I suspect was skinny disease. Other loaches showed no simptoms and they are still all alive and happy and chunky :good:

So I can't tell you if it worked - because there was nothing obvious to fix. I can tell you that it didn't harm anything. Another forum I sometimes frequent has a number of serious discus keepers and they swear by using this stuff on a regular basis. That's all I can tell you.

Can anyone who has personally used this Wormer Plus tell me whether it would have any adverse effects on platy fry in a suspended breeder net in the tank I intend to treat? I also have shrimp and plan to leave them in for the dosing, especially since Bloo said her shrimp did not seem to be troubled by it. I'm on day 3 of a Myxazin dose so the wormer plus will be used in conjunction with that. I've been told here on the forum and by Chris at Plymouth Discus (where I purchased the wormer plus) that this is acceptable, I just want to know whether the fry will be able to take it. Any advice appreciated. Thanks

The fry will be fine with wormer plus dont worry about that. Are they amano shrimp? if so, they should be ok.

and yes, you can use any meds with wormer plus without a problem :good:

Thanks Paulf, yes they are Amano. I used it a couple of nights back and all seem well. I'm on day 5 of the Myxazin today and have seen a slight improvement in the fish that I'm treating the tank for. She was looking very dull and flaky with fin rot but she's certainly looking brighter and a little less flaky than she was. Her fin is still pretty shredded so I'm debating whether I should continue with the Myxazin for a few more days or whether to have a break and then try again?

From reading above, I assume the myxazin is for the fin rot and the wormer plus is for another fish?

If its another fish and you also have a clown with skinny diease, I would finish the myxzin off first, use carbon for 48 hours, and then treat the clown with mix of the wormer plus and waterlife octazin at the same time, raise the temp and add an airstone

I was back and forthing on here with Wilder the other evening regarding my sick Platy. I don't have any clowns in the tank, just what is in my signature. The platy has suddenly lost a lot of weight, had fin rot to her top fin, her scales had become very flaky. Her body looked like she was made of suede and her colour had darkened considerably. She had a couple of gainly white spots also. I was very dubious as to whether she would make it but ultimately was/am concerned for the other fish in the tank. So, Wilder showed me the link for the wormer plus and suggested giving this a go and at the same time to do a course of myxazin. We hoped it would protect the others from a possible bacterial infection (I also lost 2 other fish in the last 6 weeks from sudden weightloss and death) and also to protect from internal parasites. Here is the link to my post with Wilder

So I've completed the Myxazin course, I've used the wormer plus treatment and all of the tank inhabitants look in good condition aside from my little Platy who is still looking a bit ragged - although there is a definite improvement. Her scales look smoother, although a little bumpy, her colour is better and she's active most of the time and eating. The white spots have gone but the fin rot remains. I'm just wondering whether to stop the Myxazin and replace my carbon in a couple of days or whether to dose for a few more days with it. On the Myxazin box it says to administer on days 1, 2, 3, 4 & 5 and then says to continue until all symptons are clear. What do you think?

I got to be honest and say it might be easier just to euthinase the fish otherwise you are going to spend more on meds than the fish is worth, it does sound pretty far gone and from what you have said, I am not convinced its got any internal parasites - but has a number of things wrong and the best thing to do is end its suffering or as a last resort, finish the meds and then try melafix and pimafix

I know this sounds really pathetic but I couldn't kill it. I just couldn't. She also seems so much more improved. I'm going to hold off the meds for a few days and assess her then. Thanks for all the advice so far.

Not pathetic at all :)

Good luck and let us know how it does

woke up this morning and she was lying dead on the bottom with most of her scales sucked off - well I presume the shrimp had been having a go at her or something else. well I tried my best for her but it's kind of a relief that she's gone now. I'm replacing my carbon tomorrow to get rid of the myxazin and then we'll go from there. Thanks for all your support Paul. Julie

well as I explained, I used it to treat skinny disease - not for obvious worms.
How long has it been since you've treated the tank ?

first time over a month ago, and last week

f;ubendazol is also used to tream poultry for worms.
With worming most animals, the accepted method is to worm once, then 2 weeks later, dose again to kill any of the eggs which hatch. Could this be why your fish still has worms do you think?

It is, although fish are not poultry ;)

The best way to worm fish is to do them every week for 4 weeks using a proper wormer for fish, not Droncit or flubenol 5 etc as I said above.....

obviously fish are not poultry and dogs , cats, ferrets, parrots are not poultry or fish either. It's just that you treat once and kill the worms, but the eggs which have been laid and may be in the gravel, ground, cage bottom, poultry yard soil etc, will hatch out into worms and reinfect the host no matter what the species is surely? I am trying to gain knowledge and compare it to what I already know. I was wondering if the same sort of reinfectation would occur in fish as in other species.
When I stock my tank, should I for instance, use a wormer straight off just in case? I worm every animal which I take in on the basis that if I know it doesn't have worms, I am happier and if it does get sick, I know that it will have better reserves to fight off the sickness without a heavy worm burden. I plan on getting some fish wormer for my medicine cabinet just in case. Can I buy it from my lfs. :fish: :yahoo:
