Cloudy Water - Not Bacterial Bloom

Hiya Mint

Yes both tanks are internal. they suppose to do 700Lph so thought they would be strong enough. I have never used external before. as these cost me £140 i am kind of reluctant to get rid of them and change after just a couple of months unless there is a way to find out it is the filters first.........

It's the only thing i can think of. But then again if the tests are bang on then maybe not. Strange. Like i said, Seachem Purigen would probably help.

Hi Branwyn,

I notice the Welsh flag there, whereabouts roughly are you in Wales (if you are)?

I'm experiencing similar problems,

Tank parameters normal (readings from yesterday in my sig), well filtered, nothing dead, lightly fed, my lights are on longer as I have some plants (but its just an arcadia arcpod ;p), I also have sand (its pets at home stuff) which was washed....

I've just added some filter wool to my external and its done nothing today so far...

I think it may be a problem with the actual tapwater...

Hiya Nurgle.

I don't think the tapwater would cause this. others who live in this area don't get the same problem using the same water. i am doing everything right but cannot fathom what is causing it. the fact the corydoras are laying eggs galore shows inside the tank they are happy and not stressed.

I am 100% welsh but went over to the darkside about 19 years ago when I joined up and now live in Yorkshire. i fly my flag as I am always proud to be welsh

Just ordered some Seachem Purigen and will let you know how it goes when it arrives x

Did you get it bagged or loose? If it's loose then you will probably need to use some old tights or similar to bag it up in.

When using the purigen, make sure the water passes through it AFTER it goes through your biofilter. If not, it can rob your bacteria of ammonia and starve them out. Purigen is a great product, but it is actually TOO strong. It will cleanse the water of just about EVERYTHING. Use with caution...

After my talk with seachem about the prime, they sent me 2x purigen (apology gift), but we didn't use it. We don't use carbon in our filters ever ( we don't use meds, so we don't need to remove them and we overfiltrate, so our waters crystal clear), and i liken purigen to carbon.

Purigen is like carbon in that it will remove meds and other contaminate materials from the water, but it is very different as it will deal with ammonia, nitrite and nitrate as well, unlike carbon.

From the seachem website:
Purigen® controls ammonia, nitrites and nitrates by removing nitrogenous organic waste that would otherwise release these harmful compounds.

In other words, it can starve your bacteria by removing the ammonia and nitrite from your water. Unless you plan to continually use this stuff, be very careful about how you use it and what you do when you remove it.

You make it sound like dynamite mate.

It is probably the best filter media available and is harmless when used at the top of the filter before the water enters back into the tank. It is highly regarded amongst the plant people and offers crystal clear water conditions. It is also reuseable which makes it worth while in the long run.

As I said, it needs to be used AFTER your filter bacteria so that they are not starved.

For folks with a HOB filter, like me, Purigen would probably cause as many problems as it would solve. Making sure that it came AFTER the filter bacteria would not be as easy as just putting it in the last compartment of the canister filter. Sorry, but it is a little trickier for some folks than just putting it in the filter. It could kill off the good bacteria that folks have spent so much time cultivating. I just thought a warning was in order. I am not saying it shouldn't be used, but it is VERY different from activated carbon, and it should be described as such.

I never said it was. There is plenty of information on the net regarding purigen which is available for people to research it further. Many people use it with very touchy fish such as rams and chocolate gouramis which require very precise water conditions to thrive.

Its a very valid point that you make, I can't fault you on that mate, but branwyn uses normal internal filters and is looking for a product that will help with her random water cloudiness. Nurglepuss who also showed interest has an external filter so would also be fine.

Although I did over look hob filters as I have never had one so have no real knowledge of them.

That's what makes this forum work. Lots of different viewpoints, so that all bases are covered. :good:

The carbon statement was in response to orandas comment. I just wanted to put the facts on the differences out there, because they are many. If someone didn't due the proper research, but just acted based on what is said here, we should always strive to keep the information as accurate as we can.
