What is the minimum tank size, and are they good community fish? Would it get along with a common plec?

probably look at atleast 55 usg.

but you`l be lucky to get hold of one as they are VERY rare, almost extinct in the wild and very few breeders, i was offerd one for 170 quid a while ago

...and then you have to think is it ethical to get one, and put it in with a common (which ethics aside might be a bit of a giant compared to a zebra, so said zebra may get bashed about a bit accidentally) when they are so rare. I personally feel zebras should be left for those who know how to breed them, and kept in breeding groups, but everyone has a different view on that. They're not a good starter plec, that's another thing.

There are leopard frog plecs which are very strikingly marked, and one heck of a lot cheaper. Also flash plecs, and some peckoltias, and many other pretty fish. Try checking out this place for good info on plecs:

So it was very lucky when I saw a tank at Petsmart selling them for $5 each???
Why aren't they a good beginner plec? And why such a big tank?

they are very delicate fish and plecks are very messy fish so the klarge volume of water helps to disperse all the waste,,,,
the fish you saw were probably falce zebras, there are several species that look like it

But they only get to 3 inches, surely they can't produce THAT much waste?

at $5 they were clearly not a zebra plec ;)

They are a small plec and will easily get bullied away from food by bigger fish.

LMAO $5 Xebra Plec. Is it April 1st. There is not a fool on the wrold who would sell them for that to the shop let alone to the customer.

If someone had bred them he would know the value from the parents he bought. If they were stolen they were stolen for a reason (being the value)

If someone had inherited them and they had fry then they would've noticed the shopkeeper feinting as they were put under his nose.

$100 would be cheap for these. I guess you have seen a plec with stripes, incorrectly labelled. Take a pic and post it here, and if it is L46 Zebra then buy them all and you should start to bred them as they are v rare.

I would suggest as Smith would probably back me up a 30g minimum, lightly stocked as to let the water never be at risk. They are small plecs.

Look forward to the pics. Do they look like the Zebs in SmithRC's signature above this post?

LOL. aaaah dear. better than Sid JAMes and the CO crew at their best. aaaaah tears running down my cheeks.

They looked like the one in Smith's siggy, but the white stripes were a little bit whiter. They were about 2 inches. I can't get any pics, though.

Wow - whiter than a real zebra and $5...

Buy them all - sell some, and keep 5 or 6 in a 30Gal.

I'll take a risk and say no.

Get a piccy and we'll try and tell you what they actually are.

I can't get a pic. I don't know how soon my mom will take me there. It could be a few weeks. By then they'll probably be gone or at a much higher price.

tell your 'mom' that you can get $300 fish for $5 and plan to sell some to make a bit of money and I'm sure she'll help you out ;)
