Zebra Nerite Snails

I have Zebra Nerite snails. I read that you need to be careful with an open top tank as they can climb out! Well, i have a lip over my tank, so think its ok. But today i found one snail above the surface of the water.

1) Can they live out of the water?
2) Was the snail suicidal?

I heard that they only go above the waterline if they are breeding or if they don't like the water quality. Mine goes above the water every so often but always comes back down again. It may just be searching for more food, how much algae do you have?

Loads still haha. Water is not brackish, so shouldnt be breeding. My discus like the water, so they better appreciate it lol. All the other snails seem ok, but one or two sneek up to the top. No problem so far, just dont want them dying as they are out of the water!
