Sorry if this is a common question. I tried a search but there was too much stuff to wade through.

I've actually done some deliberate breeding of guppies recently - it's always been completely random and accidental before :p .

The mothers are very dark with bright yellow spotted tails and yellow dorsal fins - the prettiest I've seen (though I'm no expert). I introduced three of them to a red tailed male.

The offspring - not surprisingly - are very mixed but some of them were all yellow. A friend of mine, who used to breed guppies, told me that they would all be female - which made sense because I've had all yellow females before. One of these yellow babies, however, has turned into a yellow bodied male with a red tail.

Is this common? He's very gaudy! :S

Apologies for the quality of the pics - they're very active these guppies!:

Any comments welcome

There is a whole spectrum of colors out there for Guppies. If you see it, someone else has probably seen it too. Great looking fish BTW.

Thanks. I expect you're right. I can quite see why his particular colour combination hasn't proved too popular! :hyper:

Stunning fish though, but similar to imported fish.

But home breed are much better fish!!!!!!

He's a stunning male and you have a lovely female too, but the colours and patterning are really not that unusual. The only particularly rare colouring i have seen in guppys is the true violet leopard patterning, pure white, pink and orange and some others i can't remember. Guppys basically come in every colour and pattern you can think of now days, breeders have been selectively breeding all sorts of tail/fin types, colours and patterns in guppys for a very long time now- sorta like betta's i guess.
Personally i often love the crossbreeds a lot more than the purebreeds, and its also very enjoyable to watch your guppy fry grow up and see what colours and patterns appear on them as they grow :good: .

My LFS sells lots of yellow males, I have a yellow male myself and will attach a pic for you.

He has like a lepoard skin type pattern on him. He is just devine to look at and especially when he is showing off.

Thanks everyone for your replies. My Gaudy Boy is obviously quite common
I suspected as much but just wanted to ask.

I so agree with helterskelter about home bred guppies. It took me around two years to get a group of guppies that lived for more than about four or five months. They're all homegrown now and - like Tokis-Phoenix says - it was watching the boys develop their colour that was fascinating and prompted me to try a bit of "directed" breeding.
I shall have to stop now though - running out of tank space! I always say that I'm going to take the youngsters to the lfs - but then I imagine them going to cycle a tank or to someone who knows nothing about fish - and I end up keeping them. :p I've separated the boys from the girls (although I know it'll be a while before the babies stop).

Thanks for your pic Rhiannon - he is a pretty boy. I've seen yellow snakeskin patterns before and they are lovely. It was plain yellow I hadn't seen - obviously my lfs's aren't very adventurous when it comes to guppy varieties.
