hi, does anyone know any makes of yeast that are good for diy co2. becuase my mums stuff doesnt work! even tho it is activated, and fast action. it doesnt do anything in the warm water. some brand names would be useful so i can get some in the supermarket! thanks. or some tips on diy co2 wodnt go a miss! :good:

use brewers yeast as it can support a higher alcohol content therefore lasting longer & more efficient, anyy brand will do, look on ebay.

I use the "active dry" yeast that they sell for making bread. It needs to be reconstituted before you put it in your sugar solution. The way to do that is on the label of the yeast. Just follow the directions but be aware that the temperature can be quite critical when it comes to getting a good start.

how do you measure the temperature? i just use warm water! anyone heard of fresh yeast? any good?

whats reconstituted??? that might help me understand

gets sachets, the water should be around 25 - 30C any hotter and the yeast wil not work, any colder and it wont activate.

My perfectly scientific test for measuring the correct water temperature.

Put my finger first in the tank, then in the water for the yeast. If the temperature feels about the same, I know it's yeast-safe (my tank is 28C). :)

ahh a good idea! thanks! i have activated yeast for bread but i think the water may have been to hot! after it is in the bottle and reacting, how do you keep it warm?

Once it has activated it should stay active in room temperature. My yeast bottles sit on the edge of my tank though, so that they're warmed slightly by the lights. This has the added benefit of generating more CO2 during the day and less at night.

room temp is around 25C so you dont have to worry, some people have it on the hood where the ligthing is, i just have it in the cupboard :)
