Yayyy! Baby Guppies! I Think...

I was having a good look in my tank yesterday - as at the moment I seem to have had a mad boom of tiny snails - and notices a tiny little fish with big boggley eyes staring back at me hiding in my plants!
I was over the moon, and then this morning when I went to feed the fish, I found another slightly smaller one!
I'm pretty sure they are guppies as I have a few male guppies, and one female (that was also given to me as a baby) and they look exactly as she did when I first got her. I do have other fish in the tank, but have never been able to sex them so have no idea what they are.
I can't keep myself from checking on the tank every 2 seconds now to see that he hasn't been gobbled up by one of my other fish! I know its highly unlikely, but is there anything I can do to help prevent this from happening?
And also, is there an easy way to get rid of my snails? I'm not inundated with them but every time I notice one I have to keep getting my hand in and trying to grab it and just wondered if there was anything I could put in the water to kill them, but not harm the fish?

P.S - I have looked through some of the other posts on here which have told people to net the babies and relocate them to stop them from being eaten.
However I unfortunately have not got anywhere I can put the babies that will be heated! Does this mean they have a low survival rate?

Hi Amy

With your little babies i think your best bet will be to try and net them and put them somewhere else, Or it wont be too long before they will all be eaten up I'm afraid.
There are two things I would suggest, but first how big is your tank and what fish have you got?

i suggest getting a little breeding box that floats in the top of your tank
and put them in that.... then no fish can eat them

Hi Amy,

Def get a breeding box. They are really cheap and float safely. I expect more babies may emerge over the next few days. We have them...38 at the last count

Bad news =[
I think my babies have been eaten, I can't seem to find them and havent been able to for the past few days.
I have a Fluval Edge tank so I didnt know if I would be able to put a breeding box in it because of only having the small opening?

hmmm... i remember when i had baby mollies at one poitn and we saved 5 by just netting them and keeping them in a largish net for a while .... and if they have ... guppies are breeding machines and you will soon see soem little fry around some time soon

also doesnt your tank have any space at the top because the box floats in the water with a the rim just over the water.... look them up on youtube.. you will see what i mean... normally any breeding box can be put in a tank.. just because it floats at the top of the water... not on top of the water

I expect everybody's got their own methods, but we found using a small glass tumbler a good way of catching fry. It's easy to see if you actually caught anything and there's no chance of harming them in the net. Also you can simply pour them into the breeding box
