Xray (Glowlight) Tetra

Morning all.

Whilst watching the tank last night, i noticed my Xray Tetra darting upto the surface, gulping then shooting back down. My Dwarf Gourami and Albino Cory both do it also (although i believe this is expected from those particular sepcies), but why the Tetra? It seems one will do it, then another will follow, then another until 6/7/8 of them have done it, maybe they think there is some food on the surface? All water tests are as expected, no new additons to the tank for 4/5 weeks now.

Do you have any floating plants and what type of breeding strategy does that tetra species employ? Scatterers or egg depositors?

Yes, do try increasing surface movement for the moment.

I have ordered some floating plants off Ebay kittyKat, i'm presuming my Dwarf Gourami will love them.

I have no idea what breeding strategy they employ... i am certainly not at the stage of being able to succesfully breed anything just yet.

…but I was trying to imply that if you did have floating plants, and the species did breed by depositing their eggs individually (which would have been extremely unusual for tetras), then that could have been the behaviour you were observing, but a quick search tells me that they're with the rest of the common tetras in that they're egg scatterers. Spawning methods is one of the things you should be aware of, for the fish you keep

It probably was only lack of oxygenation in the end, did increasing the surface movement help?

Ah, ok. Yes it did KittyKat... i moved the outlet around a little, found the desired agitation level and they haven't done it since. Sorry for missing your point on the egg business.
