Wow Nitrates Through The Roof

As the title says tested my water just now amd these were the results

Ph-7
Ammonia-0
Nitrite-o
Nitrate 160ppm(probably more)

Would this explain why my corys are struggling I lost 1 today

Also I've noticed my filter outflow is a bit weak compared to what it should be would that be have caused the nitrates to rise so suddenly?

Obvious question is, how long since you did a water change and following that answer, have you tested your tap water?

Last week was my last water change doing my weekly maintenance today. No never tested my tap water but I know its not that high as its never been that high. I can't think what else it could be apart from the filter

Working backwards the nitrate is a bi-product of processed nitrite which is a bi-product of processed ammonia which is a bi-product of fish and food waste.

So, overfeeding can be one source of your high nitrate.

If you do a large water change, say 60-70% and clean half your filter media (in tank water) test your water straight after, feed minimally for a week then test again. Post both results.

Ok ill do that tommorow and it could possibly be over feeding that's caused this then. I'm always worried everone isn't getting food lol thanks for your help will try what u said and post the results

Believe me, all fish will get enough to survive on.

In the wild fish live on the brink of starvation most of the time so they are well spoilt in our aquariums.

If you are afraid of timid fish or bottom dwellers not getting their share try adding the evening feed after all lights are out now and again.
