Would Halfbeaks Jump Out Of An Open-topped Aquarium?

Hello,

All halfbeaks have the potential to jump when alarmed. It's what they do. That said, I've yet to see Dermogenys spp. jump, but I've lots several Nomorhamphus spp. through forgetting to cover a tank or bucket while working on the tank. They are more "jumpy" when newly imported. Settled Dermogenys spp. actually become astonishingly tame, to the extent I can hand-feed mine or even stroke their backs without any sign of alarm or stress. So I'd suggest D. sumatrana would be one of the better species to try this with... but still, it's not without risk.

Adding floating plants inhibits jumping.

As for water depth, they couldn't care either way... deep tank, shallow tank, all the same to them.

Cheers, Neale

I was thinking about getting a pair of Sumatran Halfbeaks for my 100 litre aquarium... It is an open-topped tank ( and slightly deeper than halfbeaks prefer, I'm afraid )... will they jump?
( actually... will any halfbeak species jump out of a tank? )...
Thanks...
