Top or Topless

When I need a new lid, I often find it's a lot cheaper to go to the local glass shop and ask them if they have any scraps they can cut to size for me. I do the lid as two pieces and glue a handle of some sort to one so it's easy to open.
It’s very easy to make your own tops and going to the glass shop with your dimensions usually gives you a better fitting lid than you can buy . An easy hinge is to mask off the hinge with masking tape ( a couple layers thick ) and use silicone sealant as the hinge . A guy in an aquarium shop showed me that .

My problem with lids is that my 6 active tanks have 2-3 plant boxes on the rim plus 1-2 HOB filter devices. It would be a feat cutting out a lid from glass or acrylic that would fit properly.
