Would A Storage Container Be Ok Long Term

ive seen some one using a clear plastic storage container as a tank would it be posibble to use one as a perminant tank or not for tropicals that is

i use big plastic storage containers as temporary fry tanks for goldfish and red clawed crays...dont know what effect long term use would have on the containers though?
also use water butts as fry tanks.....those work well and are built to store water!!
