Sure it can work...it would have to be small though otherwise your blasting your tank with too much flow. A while ago there were some links to small externals on ebay...look there. Another option is a hang on back filter. These will do the job fine also leaving the tank free of equipment.

There are some very small canister type filters that are made to hang in a frame on the back of the tank. I have one running on a 10 and another running on a 20. I cannot recommend the brand because I find the hoses less than durable in their construction. The filters themselves seem to be quite good but they skimped too much on the hoses and ended up with something that I cannot suggest to anyone else.
