Wordy's Seahorse Tank

Hi Everyone

I'm finally taking the plunge and setting my 94L River/Reef tank up as a Seahorse tank.

10kgs of live rock, live sand, water and a sachet of Purigen are in the tank, and Ive got the test kits and refractometer.

Phase 2 is going to be to get the whips, macro aglae, CuC and a Fire Fish, this will take place in the next couple of weeks. The rock is fully cured and was in a big tank with fish in already so it's technically cycled, but I'm going to leave it for a week to get established and make sure the test come out perfect before anything living goes in.

Once everything is settled in we'll be having a drive across to the Simply Seahorse shop and hopefully get a pair of Hippocampus Erectus, Hippocampus Barbouri or Hippocampus Kuda.

I'll post a couple of pics when the sand has settled, the water is still a bit cloudy at the moment.

When you say whips I presume you mean gorgonians?

YesI meant gorgonians, I've rang the guy at Simply Seahorses to make sure what I planned was going to be seahorse friendly and he said the Sea Whips were compatable with the Seahorses.

Please don't use sea whips (or gorgonians) as the sea horses will end up stripping them.
In the wild sea horses will hitch to gorgs but they have many to pick and choose from so the gorg doesn't get damaged, in a closed system (ie aquarium) the repetitive hitching will damage and eventually kill the gorgonian.

The only species that I can think of that will deal with constant sea horse attention would be Muricella plectana and Muricella paraplectana, if you can find one of those you are a luckier person then me

So please dont put gorgs into a seahorse tank, the rest looks good though

seahorse keepers may not agree with me on the above though but thats because they want the horsies to be happy, i like gorgonians (as you will soon find out)

Fair enough, I'll leave the Gorogians out of the tank and buy more macro aglae. the last thing I want is for anything to get hurt.

good plan , sea grasses make good sea horse hitches aswell as things like caulerpa and halimeda.

It's the 1st time I've used the tank. I've had it over a year but had other things to sort out around the house before I could get it setup and give it the attention it will deserve. I've got pics of it as I've been setting it up and I'll get those posted later today.
