Wood Question...

I have been given a really nice piece of wood which looks rather like tree roots. Its quite pale and I was told that it won't sink for ages.

1. Anyone know what type of wood its likely to be? I thought it might be mopani?
2. If its pale in colour, what is the likelihood of getting tannins in my tank? I was hoping because it is pale I might not get brown water.

Oh - and if anyone has good suggestions for a shorty like me scaping the bottom of a very deep tank (51cm) I would be very grateful

You could weight it down with slate to get it to sink. Also letting it soak in a bucket of water for about a month will help. A picture would help us be able to identify it.

Doesn't have to be soaked but it may discolour the water, which will lower the PH, it's more of an aesthetic thing really.

Slate would be a good idea. That's a very nice piece of wood you have!
