Woke Up To A Sick Tank 3 Dead L134 Grrrr

disaster has struck unknown desease has ripped through my tank in less than 8 hours turned the light off last night everything was fine turned the light on today at 11am to find 3 L134 upside down and stiff as a board with patches of slime coat hanging off all my other fish black widdow tetras silver dollars at the water surface gasping run all water tests and theres 0ppm ammonia 0ppm nitrite and 0.5ppm nitrate

this is not my fish but its the exact same thing thats happened to mine ive had the fish 9 months now with no pevious health probloms

i did find my female bn with this protrusion yesterday so i put the fish into quarantine i think it could be columnaris flexibacter anyway im off to do a large water change and some research now BAD TIMES

I can't help with the cause of the fish deaths, but the protusion on the cheek you have circled is quite natural. It's a set of retracting barbs that BNs have for display/defense

its only on 1 side and it looks pretty sore to me its never displayed them before makes sense though cheers

yeah i checked everything all i can think is that somethings got into the tank chemicles or something just done 80% water change and all the gaspers are ok now so ill have to keep my eye on it

gutted ive been trying to sell them aswell cos im strapped for cash but had no interest so i sorted all the tank out for breeding them instead they were almost ready aswell

So sorry to hear about your loss. It happens to all of us so don't blame yourself.

Did you check your filter to make sure it was working properly not blocked? I had two incidents this month when my filters in 2 separate tanks got blocked and stopped working overnight. Fish were gaspiing at the surface in the morning. Did 70% water change in each case and unblocked the filter, then placed it above the surfce to agiatate water and add more oxygen to the water (a useful trick I learnt on this forum). Managed to save my cichlids but lost three CAEs in my other tank. Feel really bad about it but the filters were OK the night before so there was nothing I could have done to preevnt it.

still got 1 luckily if you can call it luck everything else is fine sevurum, dwarf pike and laetacara werent even gasping only silver dollars and black widdow tetras were at the surface i think it was something in the water i did all ammonia nitrite and nitrate tests and checked all filters and heaters and all was fine

Sorry about the loss pal! Its heart breaking. I have some bogwood in my 4ft tank and found a sterbai under it the other day! I was absolutley devastated!

Thought it was pretty rigid, but obviously loach's etc knocked it over enough to squash the poor thing!


out of query did you have any cucumber or zucchini in there because, luckily, I found that I left a piece in for just under a day, when i got back from work it was mush and had somehow drained the tank of im guessin oxygen as my Denisoni's and red eye tetra's were also as the top. Big water change and Vac and everything fine.

Just thought with several L's in there maybe this could have been your downfall.

I'm sorry to learn whats happened in your tank. Have you looked into a PH crash caused by unstable KH being the cause? I'm just as puzzled as you are and I'd be very eagar to know what could be done to prevent such a shock recurring.

no all my tests where fine Ph 6.5 as always i think some thing either air born or in the water that i cant test for there all fine now after a big water change earlier ill see what its like in the morning fingers crossed
