I'm rapidly getting addicted to fish keeping. Now have a Juwel Rekord 96 and a 5 gal Hosp tank all set up but the kitchen worktop the Juwel tank is on is crying out to have a bigger tank resting on it and my head is spinning with all the possibilities this would give me. So right now at this point in time this is what I'd love to have:

Tank: 6ft long x 12-14" x 18" high.
Lighting: 1-1.5 W/G would be fine as long as there was room to take it to 2-2.5 in the future (Not dabbled with CO2 just yet)
Substrate: Well with 6ft to play with I have options. It'd be sand based, probably something like onyx as I like the way it doesn't reflect as much a silver sand and I plan on going planted.
Plants: Yep. Lots of Java fern and other low light tolerant stuff initially. Lots of bogwood and rocks too.
All the normal filtration and stuff.

Well that gives me probably a smidge over 60 US gallons to play with. so now to the fun stuff: Fish!
Starting at the bottom I like Cory more than plecs and the more the merrier. It'd be a close call between Pygmy and Corydora Sterbai. At least 6. Also I would love to have a small group of chain loach, botia sidthimunki.
I like the contrast of having different shapes and sizes of fish but obviously they all have to get on.

On the small end a shoal of one of the smaller Rasbora would be lovely. Maybe 15 or so but I would also seriously consider Cherry barb just because they get everywhere and I have been so happy with my current ones. I also like the smaller Gourami, Sparkling, Croaking or Chocolate are all lovely so a smaller group of them would be good. As we have the space I'd have some Celebes Halfbeak in there too as they would add interest and a bit of "what the heck is that?" factor. Now maybe something a bit more active, Boesemani Rainbow Fish look pretty awesome and would add movement and colour.

I'd probably leave myself understocked because you can guarentee that a week after putting everything in you see something else that you want!

What would you do?

i have my dream tank, ( dont laugh :look: )
i started off with a 30ltr tropical and fell in love with livebearers.
now i have a 5 foot tank full of them
it has 2 filters and is full of live plants and natural rock.

I'm not being at all realistic here...but right now mu dream 'tank' is:

Tank: 10' x 5' x 5' , the same length as my bedroom wall - the depth of the tank eats into my little brothers bedroom...but why does he get a bigger room than me anyway?! If my family win the lottery, I'm replacing the wall.
Lighting: Natural sunlight supplied - glass skylight above it, or maybe I'll just house the tank in a glasshouse. I would have a lot of those big 'blue moon' florescent lights for night time viewing.
Substrate: Loads of the inert 'play sand' for the main substrate, heavily planted areas would have the aquatic soil you buy for ponds, the back would slope up a good 2-3' with this pond spoil (supported by rocks underneath).
Heating: Computer controlled to reflect the seasons, during the winter when a sensor detects the sun has gone down, it will switch the heaters to 22 degrees celcius (lowest i will be throughout the year). Basically night time and day time will both have different temperatures in spring, autumn, winter and summer. The highest temperature is 28 degrees celcius for a couple of hours during mid day at the hight of summer.
Filtration:6 fluval fx5's.
Plants: A mixture of fast growing weeds, and tough plants that herbivores should leave alone.
Fish:Ohhhhhh, this could take a while. 100 bronze corydoras (with some albino corys mixed in there because I like them). 6 bala sharks, 2 common plecs and 1 sailfin plec (who I already have). 200 Head and Tail Light Tetras (or whatever tetras take my fancy at the time), 5 feather fin synodontis, 12 silver angelfish and probably 2-3 goldfish. Along with rescued fish and any suitable fish that take my fancy at the lfs.
Water:The soft pH ~7 tap water I get here, with pond dechlor added. It will do 20% water changes it's self every month or so when required (computer controlled).
Ferts:PMDD - not even going to bother working out dosing for a fictional tank.
DecorA single large piece of bogwood, approx 3' x 4' x 12' (coming up above the water with ferns/'air plants' growing on it), and lot's of dark stones collected from a river scattered on the sand.

Theres a corner tank in my local maidenhead aquatics that looks just like a Trigon 350 but has had some fancy Italian designer work done on it. The cabinet looks amazing. Also the external canister filter is built into the cabinet with two flow bars built up through the bottom of the glass tank and up in to rods into the main body of the tank. Looks awesome. I just need to rob a bank, or several, before I can afford it. :shifty:

Sounds like my idea of a dream tank!!

Although for livebearers I'd have:

3 x Tuxedo Platy
3 x Sunset Wags
3 x Red Platy
3 x Mickey Mouse Platy
3 x Blue Coral Moon

Then I'd let the tank populate with their fry!

I'd probably have a few Corydora to make the bottom a bit more active too.

I don't know much about the tanks out there, but there is one tank i have had my eye on for quite some time in the LFS, a Trigon 190, a 260 litre tank that comes with gravel, fake plants (hate 'em) filter and lighting. But it is special cos it is a 3 sided, bow-fronted tank that would go really well in our front-room, and i could keep my old tropiquarium 68 as a hospital/breeding tank.

Just need to convince my parents now.....

Thats a Fluval Venezia 350 - very very nice tank. Basically fluval took the trigon 350 and made it good - there actually decent lighting in there (t5's) - and obviouisly the fluval filter is MUCH better than the juwel internal filters. The lighting controls on the hood are a plus too.

You know the trigon 190 is only 190 litres? It's a nice tank (I have one), but the lighting is useless for growing plants, and juwel filters are renowned for breaking.
IMO the Fluval Venezia 190 is a better choice :good: .

People underestimate juwel filters.i have 2x jumbos with at total of 2500 lph and they keep the water crystal clear for 3 weeks with a stocking for a 200 gallon tank...on my rio 400 btw

The juwel filters aren't bad when they are working, but it just everyone I've met with a juwel tank doesn't use the filter that came with it because its broken.

And my juwel tank was bought 2nd hand 6 months old with a broken filter (still got a good price though, he threw in a fluval 4+ too).

I guess it's just like fluval external filters, no one on this forum seems to like them because apparently they break, but in real life and on some other forums everyone I've spoken to loves them.

We had a juwel tank which is about 12 years old and the powerhead never broke.Passed down through family. They are ugly though, thats why people replace them most of the time with externals...Just my imo.

i cant decide i would need alot of big tanks cause i want way too much, oh to be rich :)
