right, i planning to take the hood off my rekord 120, as i have serveral clip on lights lying around. also, i can then attach another external filter and it wil be easier for maintenece as i can just lift the clip on lights up. but they are only small and this would leave 90% of the tank surface open.

my question is i have a small community set up, with gold barbs, harleqins, neons, (black and normal) WCMM, platies, ottos, clown plecs and an apple snail.

now will any of these fish jump? (e.g are reknown for jumping?) and will the snail go above the water level (im sure it wont as it will die if it does that but some snails can store water so i wasnt definate)

so any help would be amazing. esp quick replies.

cheers, enjoy the rest of your sunday!!!

No known serial jumpers there, although yes the apple snail will go over the top and possibly not find its way back, so keep an eye on it.

ahh well i selling my little tank and my large one is not set up and that wil not have a top on either. well i dont know what to do to make it stay, i will just have to see what happens. cheers minx, your a legend.

The only thing I can think of, would be to lower the water level slightly, that way, once it reaches the top, realises no more water, it wont make the extra squidge past the top of the tank. They dont often go past the waterline, least mine dont. You could always put a net of some description over the top, wouldnt look great, but would stop it.

i think i will just hope,

i know apples leave the water to lay eggs but seeing as i only have one that shold eliminate that issue. can i ask, how often do they breed? are they as prolific as ramshorns or mts? i have never seen babies, are they big - ish when they hatch?

As minxfishy mentioned, none of the fish would be classed as jumpers but all fish will occasionally jump. And snails (most inverts) will leave the tank if there is a hole large enough. There are always snail shells around the stand of my 29 gallon and the openings in the cover are really very small but the snails still get out.

Besides keeping inhabitants inside, the cover also serves the purpose of keeping other things (dust, dirt, cats, dogs, etc.) out of the tank.

Cant advise on the breeding rate of them nick, as mine to my knowledge, havent bred. But its easy to keep them down if they do, as they will lay the eggs around the top, out of the water, I think they are a pinkish colour, so just take them off if you dont want them to spread

Try asking down in the inverts for a better answer :)

Do you have any floating plants?. They could deter any potential jumpers.

white clouds do jump out and will! in the last 3 weeks ive lost 3 white clouds...im still missing another. one jumped out and when i found her she was all dried up but when i plopped her back in she came back to life. be careful. they dont tend to jump out as often if the tank has at least a rim of some sort around it. also avoid keeping the water level too high.

i notice they leap into the air if startled or scared

i've had wc minnows jump out while doing maintenance

apple snails will only breed if you have a male and a female snail - they are single sexed unlike other snails , they lay their eggs out of water when they have bred and take about 3 weeks to hatch
but if you only have one snail then you're not going to get anymore

Apple snails do leave the tank if they can - before i sealed up the hole in my tank lid - every morning there was a slime trail on the floor leading to an apple snail - they can survive out of the water for a few days so be careful and keep checking the tank - lowering the water wont make a difference to the snails leaving but it should to the minnows jumping

the minnows are little buggers
