Today I came home from school. After about half an hour of being home I saw something on the floor in my bedroom. After a closer inspection I realised it was my betta (I hadn't seen him as he was up very close to my cupboard). He had jumped out of his tank onto my cupboard (where the tank sits) and then off that and onto the ground. I thought he was dead and went to get something to scoup him up in. When I came back and tried to pick him up he moved. I quickly put some water in a little plastic holding tank (probably about a few litres) and put him in there.
Considering that he must have landed on the cupboard first, which would have made a wet patch, and there was no mark there I think he must have been down there for a few hours. I don't like his chances at surviving, but is it possible that he will be okay???
How long can bettas last out of the water?
Please tell me that someone has experienced this and their betta has pulled through.I just feel so bad for him right now.

bettas can last longer out of water than most fish due to them being able to breath air, unsure of exactly how long though, hope he pulls through

I have read stories of betta in the wild surviving out of water for days, they were wrapped in mud though.

I would be more worried about any physical damage.

How is the betta behaving? Does he look like he has damaged anything? Is he behaving normally?

Have you covered the tank?

When I first put him in the tank some of his fins were clamped up to his body and he wasn't swimming around at all. Now the fins aren't clamped and he is swimming around a bit. Amazingly, he seems to be acting almost normal. He doesn't seem to have damaged anything, but I'm not very good at identifying problems with fish. I fed him a couple of his betta pellets and he ate them. Probably not as quickly as usual, but he still has an appetite.
He is still in the small tank as he wasn't swimming well earlier. I also didn't want to put him in his tank because I don't want the neons to pick on him and steel his food.
PS: I know your not meant to keep bettas with tetras but he gets along well with them.

I would keep an eye on him, make sure his water is at a good temp etc.

If he is swimming about normally I would be encouraged by that.

I dont think bettas ever lose their appetitie, but again that is a good sign.

Does the new tank have a lid on it?

Today he seems to be acting completely normal, like nothing ever happened to him. Which must be a good sign!!! :good:
And yes, the tank he's in now has a lid. I won't make that mistake again. (the tank that he jumped out of only has a tiny gap in the lid, like 2cm at the most, so everyone, be warned about gaps in your bettas lids. lol

I think it's safe to say my betta will be okay. He is acting completely normal. He's swimming around, eating well and following my hand. I am so HAPPY!!!

Thanks. I was really worried at first but it seems everything is okay know.

My friend said I should rename him 'Lucky'. lol
