I just need to know if it would be a waste of my time to buy a smaller filter for a divided 5-gallon, because the idea here is that there wouldn't be too much flow; so, ideally, Bettas could live happily....?

It would *probably* be set up like this (H being heater, F being filter, B being Betta, : as divider and | as tank walls):

|HB:BF|

The idea here being that regular weekly water changes would be done, and the male Betta with the shorter fins could live on the filtered side. ;) I haven't got him yet, but.... I already know him, and hopefully he'll still be there when I go back to *get him*!!!! ^^; 8D

In case your'e worried, it would kind of be an instantly-cycled operation where I add media from my current filters. ^^; ;) :) :D

Yeah it'll work, as long as the divider has nice large-grade holes. Sometimes what you get is that water on only the heater side of the tank gets warm because there is not enough circulation but I don't think it'll be a problem. In fact, if you baffle the filter you could even just have two long-finned boys. I run an under-capacity filter (1-3g, actually) in my 5g and the scrap of nylon stocking that I tied around the intake baffles it quite well.
