as per the title, decided that I will go down the flourish excel route to try to coax my plants into better growth but I have a nice fat moss ball. Will it die as per some reports on the web? anyone have experience of this?

Your moss ball is an algae, cladophora algae, and in my experience this algae is very hard to kill even with excel dosing, if it was me I would remove the algae ball from the tank altogether, prevention is better than cure IMO, why put algae in your tank even if it looks pretty.

i was overdosing my tank with flourish e4xcell (3 x the stated doseage) and my moss ball was fine

Seems that Flourish Excel does not agree with some plants with varying amounts... I got an email from Seachem advising they are putting a list of 'plants to be aware of' together soon....
