i have a 10g, but the babies are just about big enough to move to the 75g. can I keep the tank empty and have it still cycled when i have new babies?

You have a few days before the bacteria dies off,So sadly not.

Only was is to keep filter in your main tank, then when needed take out and put in holding tank, this is what i do

Isn't it possible to dose the empty tank daily with a small amount of ammonia to feed the bacteria and keep them alive? Surely this would keep the tank cycled?

It would, though if this is a fry tank it's easier to just break it down and when it's needed just take some media from the filter in the 75G. Fry create such little waste that you wouldn't need much.

well, was getting ready to break it all down in the next day or two, but my pretty mama looked about to drop today, so I moved her 5 hours ago. sure enough she dropped about 10 new fry... so I guess the tank will stay up a while longer
