Ok so I'm pricing a new tank for my Oscar and probably my bala sharks to share as a home.

I've gotten the following pricing from my lfs which is really better than any of the other places around me.

Heres the pricing
125USG $420 72"L x 18"w x 22" D ($3.5/gallon)
150USG $570 72"L x 18"w x 28" D ($3.8/gallon)
120USG $575 48"L x 24"w x 24" D ($4,8/Gallon)
180USG $869 72"L x 24"w x 24" D ($4.83/gallon)

I don't understand why theres such a dramatic change in pricing.
These are prices for the tank+stand+versa top glass hood

I'm thinking the 150 may be the best compromise but I'm not sure

I'd like to keep my oscar in there. Plus my Bala and give him a friend or two.
Also I'd like to be able to move my Clown loaches in there once they grow up a bit.

Thicker glass, and stronger base is at least part f the deal
But we're already talking about 72" front and back sided glass. Actually it's not the stand thats dramatically more expensive it's the tank. I'm just wondering if the 24" wide makes maybe a huge difference in what they have to use as the bottom of the tank or something.

Wait....you get the tank, the stand, and the glas hood for a 125 for only $420?????
Where you come across such a bargin?
Here at my lfs I can get a 55G starter kit without the stand for more than that!

Yep thats what I'm getting.

Now that doesn't include lighting/filter/heater/gravel/sand/decoration

just tank, stand and glass top.

Actually this same LFS sells a 55G with hood and strip light for $99
a 55 tank/stand/light combo is $220.

They're very reasonable.

You need thicker glass, not just bigger glass to make a tank that is 24 inches tall. and the extra depth will meant it needs to be thicker as well. I think you are looking at the bottom exceeding 10mm thick.

It's not TALL it's wide front to back that is where the price difference is.

i'd go with either the cheapest or the most expensive. obviously you don't want a 4 foot tank for balas, even if it is 2 feet wide. and all the additional space in the 150g is in the height, which isn't that much better for most fish. but the extra width in the 180g would be really nice for your oscar, if you can afford the splurge. really you could get two oscars in a tank that large.

but (i'd guess) the basic 120g would be really good too. it's wide enough for your oscar to turn around and long enough for your balas to swim straight. so sounds like a good choice to me.

of course, if you really feel like a splurge... :sly: you could just get two of the basic 120g and set them both up! 8)

the 6x2x2 jumps up in price so much as it probable has a double base, so there using another sheet of 6x2 10mm glass on the tank which will add a bit cost, also the stands are going to use more materials to make them strong enough you also have to think of the extra time building the tank.

i'd go with either the cheapest or the most expensive

I totally agree with this, those 2 tanks are your best options.
