Why Is Maracyn Illegal In Britain

I am not for sure but I have a degree in microbiology here in the states and until I got my fish and he got sick I didnt realize so many broad spectrum antibiotics were available for a cheap price at any local pet shop. I know the English and most European countries take a very progressive stance when it comes to broad spectrum antibiotics because their overuse and missuse can lead to drug resistant bacteria. For some reason we dont take the same position in the states. I admire the tough restrictive policies over there. Even when it comes to pesticides, insecticides. I could be wrong but this may be the case. Before using any antibiotic, be sure you are aware of how long to use it and what organisms it effects. Proper diagnosis and length of use is crucial in their administration. Not using them long enough could actually cause more harm, because only the most resiliant organisms survive.

afaik it is not illegal here just a prescription only medication.
that means the only a qualified veterinary surgeon can sell it
to you and only if they deem it appropriate after a proper diagnosis.

Yep, its cus its a controlled drug over here. Contains the antibiotic Tetracycline.

If I wanted a dose of tetracycline for myself here in the States, I would need a presciption from a physician but somehow I can buy the same thing for my fish over the counter. Don't ask me because it makes no sense to me either.

Okay, I speak as a qualified vet, and I am not aware of any restriction of Maracyn, other than it being a prescription drug. I have had no notification that is has entered the classification list at all.

This is correct Wolf. It would never get past customs.

why do they try to sell it worldwide then, I'm sure someone on here said they bought either maracyn or tetracycline and shared the cost with a friend so they had a stock of it

Certain meds contain these chemicals, but to buy a pure source is controlled. I can quote you the legal text if you want, or refer you to the government website

i'm not disputing you, just i'm very sure someone managed it somehow because i remember thinking at the time it wasn't a bad idea incase of really bad fish meds, no vets down here treat fish

Even if the vets down your way don't treat fish, controlled meds can still be dispensed based on information and guidelines sent to us with dosages and other requirements endorsed by the government

Hi
I know maracyn has been ordered through ebay by UK fish keepers and it has arrived safely. Yep, its illegal, but guess its down to the individual.

The vet i went to recently didn't want to help at all, despite me telling him the drug that is used in the UK.

Well I am shocked!.....Obviously, each vet will run their practice as they see fit, but I am amazed at that. As for customs, well all I can say is they are lucky. If you read the legal statement of the website that is issuing these drugs, they may very well be licensed to export, which is a completely different matter altogether.
