Can anyone tell me about the plants i've bought especially the giant thing that is growing just behind the rock. Not sure what it is but it has grown from just a few centimeteres to almost reach the top of my tank in about 7 days. Will it grow out of the top?! What other species have I got? How do I look after them well? Why are the ones at the back in front of the heater going all brown and falling apart? HELP :-(
ps. please excuse the huge thermometer

i had a weird plant before every strand stretched up like 7 inches and was about 1 cm wide but one strand of it grew up to about 22 inches and was about 2 inches fat. mine was long enough to grow out the tank but it couldnt suport it self to it just stretched its way across the top of the water

Hi there,

The long thin ones at the back of your tank look like a variety of Vallis (do best in hard water).

The large leaved one behind the rock looks like a type of amazon sword (do best in soft water), the long spike reaching for the top is the way this plant reproduces it self. You should find that you will get little plantlets forming at the joints along this stalk, once they have developed enough you can remove them from the stalk (and the stalk from the parent plant) and plant them out in your tank.

I'll leave someone else to ID the other plant in the back RHS.

As to why some of the plants are turning brown, there are lots of reasons including lighting, water conditions, nutrients etc that will affect the growth of your plants, best to experiment and settle with what grows well in your own water conditions.

I'm really not sure what your exact plant is, but it's certainly something like and Amazon Sword (Echinodorus bleheri). The stems are where the new plantlets form.

The LHS is definitely a twisted Vallis. The one in the centre is a Sword and the RHS could be Baby tears (Micranthemum umbrosum).

The plants maybe turning brown because they are too close to the heater or poor light, nutrients. We will need more info on your lighting, tank size and water parameters before offering more advice.

echinodorus flower stalk.

if left alone in the right conditions it will look a little like this

Just pull it out from the base if your not interested in propigating more plants from it.
