Why do you think people get fish wether they are big or small that hide in a big tank all the time and barly see them monthly or only come out during feeding and hide again after eating?

As they didn't no they were going to be so boring, my harlequin have put some life into the tetra's now so i'm happy.

No like a Pim of a BGF that hides alot and I always hear people that have them say "I hardly see him" or "he likes to come out every now and then to let me know he's ok" or something like that.

People keep fish for all sorts of reasons. I hardley ever see my pleco, maybe a couple times a week if that. I love that fish and have for the past 6 years... I keep him because he is my pet.

....So you can say you own em.....

What kind of pleco is it? Because I see my pleco every day and sometimes during the day to!

My plec is soo large he doesn't have much space to hide....i see him everytime I look.
His tail atleast..

Well, even though they barely see it..you can imagine how happy people are when they do. I guess it's the moment in time that gets people to keep the fish or shrimp.

I don't think thats anywhere near the point, certainly not with the guys on this forum...

I would put some of the reasoning down to the personality of the fish, or the beauty of the fish. You might not see a plec very often, but when you do it would be rewarding, possibly more so than staring at a tank full of tetras or whatever regularly.

The reason a lot of people get oddballs is for their quirky behaviour.

I own them because I like the fish. My Platydoras costatus are seldom about in night or day, yet when they do come out they look fantastic and far more impressive than any cory or tetra IMO. That's why I keep them.

And if you saw the larger pims and things that tend to hide when they come out you'd know why. Seeing a 7" fish with 10" barbels shooting around is amazing.

Another reason is for eating habits. Although you can see my Chalceus, they don't appear all that special just hanging around the tank, but dropping some food in and watching the frenzy is a site to behold.

I dont think keeping a fish that hides a lot or is hardley ever seen any different then keeping a fish that you can look at everytime you glance at your tank. A fish is a fish, don't need a reason to keep it.

I see my tyre track eel only late at night but when he does come out fully he's a site to be proud of as he looks stunning. If he was out and about all the time it just wouldn't have the same affect.

If my whole tank was filled with fish you didn't see until late night then it would be boring but because there's other fish cruising around constantly to living the place up.

Yeah, but everyones opinion is different. Some people simply prefer fish they see less often, as it makes seeing them more of an "event" or whatever.

My Kuhlis hide except at night, when all the other lights are out except theirs. I can usually see them snuffling around the sand looking for scraps of food. It's about the only way I can see them. Makes a good night light to see by too. My room is cluttered so it helps. :D

That is basically what I ment I just did not make myself clear. I ment to say, it doesn't matter, and who cares... if these people (like myself) have fish that hide all the time and they are happy with them then it really doesnt matter... to them (or me) they are no different then the fish I see daily.
