Why Do You Think People Get Fish Like This?

I can't speak for the large oddball lovers out there because I haven't had a tank large enough to keep any myself (though I'd love to). But I have kept some smaller shy or nocturnal fish that you don't see most of the time but, when they do come out, are amazing to watch and show all sorts of interesting behaviour. I can imagine it's the same with larger fish and I can just imagine how impressive a large BGK is when you catch a glimpse of it lurking in the darkness or it comes into the open briefly.

People get these fish because they look really cool. I have fish in my tanks that are nocturnal, and fish that come out during the day. I like having fish that i dont always see because, as paul said, when you do see them it makes you feel kindof excited. If i saw the fish all the time swimming around it would seem like they dont have a personality, swimming mindlessly around the tank. When you have nocturnal cool looking fish, your tank is different than the regular typical fish tank. Its cool to show people that are visiting your house fish that they have never seen before. Instead of someone saying, "Wow very pretty fish tank", they would say, "WHOA THAT IS ONE AWSOME LOOKING FISH!!!"

I personally love nocturnal fish and inverts. When they come out, among the darkness, it is a sight to behold.
Like my coral banded shrimp, in the day, he hides, but in the darkness, he is magnificent. Or my asian red-tailed cat, IMO far more majestic than most all diurnal fish. His sheer mass, and his huge barbels trailing his head, are as stated before, a sight to behold. The majesty of nocturnal animals is far compensation for how little you see them.

Well thanks for clearing that up and I guess it does make since but what I don't really get is why you get a fish that you paid 100's of dollars for but you never see it but late at night when your suppost to be in bed or only see it every now and then. I would think if you paid big bucks for a fish you'd want to see it more often. Well thats my 2 cents. Ok now I have a question about BGF's a neighbor of mine has 2 of them in a 55g and they are pretty big, I'd say about 6"-8" long each with a 6"-8" common pleco do you think these BGF's are already stunted or what because he said he had the BGF's for awhile and your not going to believe this but he says he only cleans the tank 3 times a year and he complains about how it takes him half a day to clean the tank and I told him if he cleaned it monthly it wouldn't take so long.

Do you mean BGKs? It's deffinately not a good idea to keep them in a setup like that and I feel realy bad for them. There is no telling what effect the conditions have had on them though wthout more info (which you'd need from the owner himself). It's a great shame but there's nothing you can do realy (is there?).

Yeah BGK. 2 of them a black one and a light white one and a huge commone pleco. I was so surprised when he said he only cleaned it 3 times a year and he said he does it that way because his lps said to and he also said that as long as you have good filtration you don't have to clean it much. Do BGK's produce alot of waster like plecos?

My plec is soo large he doesn't have much space to hide....i see him everytime I look.
His tail atleast..
Then you should give him for hiding spaces.....

I would keep those fish because they're awesome

Did you say one of the BGKs is white? Then it's probably a clown knife and those grow to nearly 3 feet! Do try to talk to your neighbour and, perhaps, direct him to the forum...

I love the fishy in your signature Dwarf Dude

It's more of a treat when you actually do see them, I think :D
I never see my bumblebee catfish, but I enjoy having him around anyway

Even with nocturnal fish, its more a matter of taming them at first and then finding out what foods they like- i hardly ever see my plecs during the day, but when i want to i just chuck a slice of cucumber or melon or a prawn in there and they soon forget they are nocturnal fish ;) .
My black khuli loaches are the fish i see the least, but i like having them none the less and its a similar thing with them as to the plecs- they can't resist krill, and a couple of krill soon encourages them out of their hiding places  .
