ive posted a few threads over the last few days asking for advice on fin rot i was advised to buy an api master testing kit which i did. Then i posted my test results but no one seems to be able to give any real help on this (the test results, the advice on using the kit was spot on thanks guys).

I was told to do the tests again for the tank and also the tap water which i did and posted the results last night but still no one seems to be able to advise me anymore.

Its like not enough people could tell me to go and buy a testing kit but no one can tell me what my results actually mean.

Ive got a new tank ready to relocate to but im thinking why bother now as this finrot is driving me mad.

I love fish keeping and have done so for a few years now, the only promlem ive ever had is itch which i resolved quickly maybe ive just had it to easy in the past.

It would've been more useful to bump the other thread that hasn't had any replies. Threads do get missed.

you need myxazin for finrot if you havent already used it.

you might need a bigger bottle depnding on your tank size

"buy an API test kit" is an almost automatic response by people that cant actually be arsed to think about your problem in depth.

im not saying they arent worth having, but they arent the be all and end all, and as you've found out lots of people knowledge stops at "buy a test kit". auto responses like this are one of my pet hates on the forum personally, i havnt opened my kit for about a year, and last time i did i checked it against test strips and couldnt find any real difference. i certainly wont be buying another test kit.

anyways, thats not the point.

ive not seen yoru other thread, but if all the stats of the water check out as 'normal', then at least you know your water is not the problem. im no expert, but i think finrot can be brought on by stress, which can be caused by bad water, bad tankmates. is the tank set properly to house the affected fish ideally i.e temperature, water flow, oxygen etc ?

Fin rot = bad water quality. What are the results of your water test. If you have any ammonia or nitrite you need to do water changes to drop them.

Clean water is enough to stop fin rot try this first before dosing your tank with meds

This is the original thread with no responses http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?/topic/388927-test-results-update-plz-help/

Tank size:length 28 1/2", width 19 1/2", depth 14" 30 UK gallons
pH:7.8
ammonia:0ppm
nitrite:0ppm
nitrate:40ppm
kH:?
gH:?
tank temp:26 degees cellcius

that doesn't seem like bad water quality. i would use meds now

Depending on your stock you could try aquarium salt and melafix, i have had great results recently with this while treating angels for finrot.

Even table salt can be used as long as it is non-iodized, i used 1 tablespoon per gallon along with proper dosage of melafix for a week, then gradually reduced the salt dose on every water change.

Salt will damage plants and sensitive fish so beware, it will not damage the filter bacteria.

thanks guys your help is appreciated im very strict on water changes and my results so far seem to be healthy so im going to try another dose of myxazin but before i do ive read a bit about adding salt but some people advise against could anyone elaborate?

malafix myxazin which is better? I have a betta which im worried about damageing her gill system

Melafix is a herbal medicine, and is great for healing, usually best to use this after treating with a more powerful med, or use it when fish first get injured from fighting etc. It is also linked to having a negative effect on any fish that are surface breathers due to the oily film it makes on the surface

Salt has its benefits, but it has just as many negatives, if you are using salt it is best to place the ill fish in a small quarantine tank, that way if the fish shows any reactions to the salt you can replace the water quickly, the idea on using salt for finrot is to shock the bacteria enough to kill it, and combined with melafix it would heal back quickly.

I would recommend doing more reading on adding salt if you intend on trying it, i am not sure on which fish can not tolerate it, if your case is really bad you should use a strong med like myxazin, or eSHa 2000, and use salt as a last ditch attempt.
