The other day in my LFS he said i should put the water that i get given with a fish. In a different shop he said i shouldn't. The 2nd guy has been keeping fish for35 years (apparently) . Who's right?

2nd guy.

You should either float the bag in your tank for a bit and then put the fish in.

Or you could pour the water from the bag into a bucket and then slowly add water from your tank and then transfer the fish.

Cossie is right in what he said. If you pour the water into your tank, and it turns out the water from the shop was holding diseased fish, you've now got disease in your tank.

Considering that you do not dry and sterilize the fish it is not a major benefit to not add the water to your tank. The presence of a pathogen can get in either way. And the presence of a pathogen doesn't mean a disease will break out. The fish have to be stressed to get sick (very few pathogens can infect healthy, unstressed fish). The reason I wouldn't add the water is that when fish are in the back they will poop more than usual, and the ammonia they give off will build up. This is extra waste that doesn't need to go in to a tank.

If you can at all costs avoid pouring your fish's water from your local fish store, you have no clue what diseases could be in the water.

I agree with fishguy, fish waste and ammonia buildup in bag water. You don't need that in your tank.

If the disease is your concern then you need to try a new LFS or do a PROPER quarantine. IMO 90% or more of quarantines do more harm than good. They absolutely have to be no more stressful than the display or they will cause more illness then simply adding the fish would have. The other problem is that 2-4 weeks is a laughable quarantine. A proper quarantine is at least 90 days AFTER any signs of any illness. Less than this and you should not waste your time.

+1, same reason I net out my fish. ALSO always ask the shop to use stresscoat when they put the fish in a bag.

yep i agree with peeps above net them out not so much disease like fish guy says the poop in the bag can get allot dirty buggers

I guess there is no benefit to be adding the water from the bag in a tank. But disease wise I was wondering how does it matter, if anyway sickness can come with the drops of water from the net and fish itself anyhow.
