Fry lover mentioned this in another topic, so i thought i'd set up a poll to follow on from 5teady's recent similar poll.

Please discuss.

I don't wash my hands before putting them in the tank. I certainly wouodn't use soap as i don't want to risk getting soap in the tank. Washing with hot water only might have a good argument behind it though.

lol, mate

i voted "sometimes" and "hot water and soap", i guess i care more about my fish's health than my own lol (with regards to NOT washing my hands AFTER they in tank)

I would say its more "rare" though, and i rinse them thoroughly in clean cold water and dry thoroughly if i do wash with soap.

Especially if i am cleaning in the flat in the few hours before, i trust having simple soap onm my hands and then rinsing thorough than i do with household detergent left overs on hands (when is say rinse, i mean RINSE, in a big way!)

As a matter of "routine" i would not wash my hands before going into tank.

I dont like washing my hands full stop, i have dry skin, obviously i do when i go toilet

EDIT: my post reads strange, considering you not sure about using soap BTT, so many different views on this subject, we got peeps drinking straight from the tank on the other thread

I always wash my hands in hot water only before putting them in any of my tanks, also if i was them each time im going from tank to tank just incase i transfer disease (if present)

I rinse my hands off before putting them in the tank to stop from contaminating the tank and wash with soap afterwards to kill bacteria and or diseases.

i think i might ditch the soap if i do need to wash my hands, not sure it makes much sense, i was always under the impression the soap helps actually take off the contaminants on the hand, whereas plain water doesnt do this as well, regardless of how hot it is?

I guess its how much if any (soap) is left on hands after a good thorough rinse and dry?

I stick my hands straight in the tank as they are, been doing it for years. Obviously I don't go eating greasy pizza, or bar-b-que potato chips then putting my hands in the tank, but as long as they are reasonably clean, in the tank they go. I work full time in the printing industry as a pressman, ink, grease, and oil are a daily part of my hand's life. They get cleaned with an industrial hand cleaner before leaving work, but you never get all the ink out. This has not bothered my fish in the least.

I will wash them after dealing with a quar tank, to eliminate the chance of contaminating another tank. I use a splash of bleach, and rinse with tap water.

I always wash mine with soap and water. I'm not worried about the soap geting into the tank as I always rinse them well.

I wash with soap and water all the time. I make sure I dry them very well to prevent soap getting in. I haven't had a problem yet. :)

I do most of the time. I'm paranoid about the soap bothering the fish so I try to rinse real good also.

I always wash with anti bacterial soap and then rinse my hands for a good 5 mins to makes sure. Then dry with kitchen towel (easy to dispose and very slim chance of cross contamination).

Then of course a damn good scrub after I've finished fiddling with the tank(s).

I voted sometimes because I don't wash before putting my hands in everytime, if I plan on doing maintenance on the tanks(which is every mon / thurs night) then I do, but if it's something such as removing leftover cucumber or like last night my airline tube managed to slip off the airstone so had to reattach that, then I don't bother. I do wash my hands afterwards though.

I always wash my hands before i put my hands into a tank if i am straight in from work and not washed up yet, i work in the construction industry and can have paint, cement, oil and all sorts of chemicals get on my hands during a days work. At the weekends i dont bother so much, i usually do my water changes early in the morning spread over the two days so i'm straight out of bed and into the fish house so there's little chance of contaminating the tank with anything nasty.

I am buzzing with unwitty jokes at this point, but I shall leave it there as this is a family forum..
