Females are notorious for eating eggs, sometimes right after releasing them! They are usually removed right after spawning. Male bettas take care of the eggs and then take care of the fry for a few days until they can swim well, and then they are removed since that's the point when they will usually start eating fry. Some breeders find they can leave males in even longer than that, and of course there are some males who eat eggs or newly hatched fry.
