Hi folks,

After MONTHS of reading and research, I finally got discus! I do not go into things without a lot of research. But I have had my discus for 2 days now, and I have some questions. I am at the stage where I am worrying about everything they do! Some help would be appreciated!

I got my discus from a guy who seems very clued in. When I walked into his “discus house” (he built a second house at the bottom of his garden haha) I wa amazed by the quality and size of the discus.

I came back the following day after thinking about it and bought 4.

I got a breeding pair which were in a tank of their own, as well as a male and a female from a tank with around 15 discus in it. So, I have 2 males and 2 females.

Most of the time the two females hide in the back corner of my aquarium as could be expected. But the male who WAS NOT in the breeding pair keeps ‘making friends’ with the female that WAS in the breeding pair! So the 3 of them are together all the time.

The male from the breeding pair stays at the other side of the tank all on his own, and occasionally gets harassed by the other male!

So questions

1) should I be worried that this male is on his own after being replaced by the other male?
2) The male on his own fits peacefully, but seems slightly tilted down. When ever swimming or when he gets to be with the others, he is fine. Maybe this is 100% normal for them to aim at the substrate slightly?
3) Every now and again some of the fish rock horizontally…..never totally horizontal, mostly just a few degrees (30 degrees maybe) I guess, but sometimes more so than other times. Again, normal?
4) The female which was not in the breeding pair looks like she has a bruised nose! All other colours and markings are fine! Is this a known issue, or maybe just as she’s still stressed after moving? I’d get a photo, but she never moves much from behind the shelters just now!

SO, a few concerns which I hope are just paranoia?

Thanks

They are very nervous fish, mine hid for a while aswell

When they are ready they will come out

Mine sometimes swim sort of like you say 'horizontal', i think it is just normal.
Sorry i can't be more help

any help is good help!

I am sure they are fine, but i am paranoid with them now after everybody saying how touchy they can be! (though an equal number of people saying thats rubbish these days!). But with 4 bigish questions as above, i am constantly worrying!

Hope someone can settle my mind...

Do they have some large plants in the tank with them or any tank mates? Tetra settle discus very quickly, a shoal of tetra will act as an early warning system to them by their movements. Also, if the male that gets a bit bullied is slightly smaller then the larger is just trying to establish authority, I had the same thing and after a while they settled.

Discus isn't too difficult to see signs of problems....
1) they are readily eating
2) they don't have white or stringy poop
3) they do like getting aggressive with each other
4) no deformation of the body like fin rot, darkening, white eyes, clamped fins, and skinny belly

Those 4 things will tell you how healthy they are

These fish don't mate for life. New tank new tank mates and they start the pairing prosecces over. These are adult fish? Adult fish tend to take much longer to adjust then young ones. Also keeping 2 pairs is not the best idea. You should add more fish to help even out aggression. Try getting 2 more discus I think that would help a lot. The more you have the safer they feel. They need groups. One reason I love discus is because you can never have too many. Haha depending on tank size and room.

Good luck we would love some photos. Glad to see you took the dive into discus.
