Hi guys

I'm starting up my new community tank. No fish yet as trying to research what I want for my 39litre tank (not my choice it's so small - it was a gift from a friend).

I like the idea of having two African Dwarf Frogs but I'm not sure what fish to have with it. So anyone who has ADFs and have some suggestions I would be super happy to hear from you!

Here's what I'm thinking so far: neon tetras and a betta with 2 ADFs. I would like guppy instead of betta but not sure how many I can get away with and have tetras.

Look forward to your responses,

Libby

ADF's are somewhat slow to recognise food in the tank, they find it on smell, so ensure you target feed them, bloodworms is a must with them, I used to use a turkey baster to put it right in front of them.

Tetras arent a great mix with Bettas because of their long tails, tetras even neons can be nippy. I used to keep endlers with my ADF's, you could have a nice sized group of Endlers in that size tank, or look as maybe rasboras instead of neons with a Betta.

my son had them in his community tank and they were no problem, as the previous poster said you need to target feed them, they are comical when feeding as they pounce on their food and devour it!!

I have two ADFs in a community tank with various tetras, harlequins, a sailfin molly and a golden apple snail.

They were originally in a cichlid tank (pink short-bodied convicts) but the convicts were constantly picking them up and dragging them away from their nest (the frogs were after the fry I guess) so I had to rehome the frogs into my community tank and they've been happy in there for the last couple of years.

I wouldn't recommend putting a betta in with tetras - but the tetras and frogs will do ok together. Or forget about the tetras and just go for attractive male guppies.

ADFs like somewhere to hide so if you have room for a coconut shell or little cave that would be good. Having said that, my two little guys have taken up residence in the most weirdest of places...at the moment they are at the back of the filter behind the suction cap plate. There's a hollow bit between that and the glass and they sit/lie in there!

Oh and just one word of warning - before you buy them make sure they definitely are African DWARF frogs and not African CLAWED frogs. I was originally sold one as an ADF and it was only a week or two later when I did some research on them that I realised it was a Clawed frog! Had to return it to the LFS as they grow quite large and eat any small fish in the tank.

Regards, Athena
