Having introduced Ich with a pair of Rams that i didn't Quarantine first ,i have treated the tank with Interpet Whitspot + and found it utterly useless.
I have now changed to Protozin by Waterlife, which seems to be working to some extent, but my Cardinal Tetras are still covered in spots. I have upped the temperature to 82.
Can i start another course straight away or should i wait a few days. any help gratefully received.

Hi,

I'd do a water change first before starting another course, that'll help.

Plus, keep the tank lights off for the duration of the Protozin - really helps I found.

Thanks Kim, i will do that, I didn't leave the lights off last time.
How long did your Ich take to clear up ?

Think it was about a week or so (my Tetras too were the last to clear of it), but keeping the lights off really helped as Ich loves light.

Pain in the butt leaving the lights off all the time, but well worth it in the end.

All the best - let us know how you get on.

:good:

How strange is this, I was about to post a topic that almost exactly matches this!

I too introduce whitespot into my tank through a pair of non-quarantined rams and am having trouble treating it. After several treatments using the interpet stuff I too have decided to try protozin, again didn't work effectively. Following the course the whitespot disapeared initially but i have just found a few whitespots on several of my black neon tetras.

After folling the advice of a very knowledgable friend I plan to dose the tank at 2-3ml protozin per day in the 20G for a period of 7 days. Hopefully this will work as nothing else seems to.

I'm not sure how much effect leaving the lights off will have on the Ich protozoan but its got to be worth a try, i've got to the point now where i'm willing to try almost anything.

I know what you mean about trying anything, i am getting to the same stage.
Have you tried raising the temperature, as this is supposed to speed the cycle up.Good luck .

First remove all carbon. Then raise the water temp to 85 degrees. Since, you got Tetras and Rams you really can't dose a full Rid-Ich. I would either half dose the Rid-Ich to gallons of the tank or use Aquarisol. Have more airation (boost it if you can) warmer water less O2.

I upped temp added salt and interpet anti whitespot plus and turn lights off.Ich gone in 2 weeks.

Right now i am at the end of my tether, all my Cardinals have died, the dwarf Chain Loaches are still covered in spots, and rubbing on themselves on everything. The Glowlights are now getting spots and any minute now i am going to start screaming.
I am thinking of Nuking the Tank completely ,if i do this and take every thing out and wash the Gravel and disinfect plants etc, how long would i have to wait before it is safe to restock with new fish.

Does Ich effect Shrimps as they seem to be the only things unaffected by this horrid parasite, and could they carry Ich although not showing symptoms.
Thanks for any help in advance, i am having an awful day all round .I had an X ray 2 weeks ago, and my Doctor today confirmed that i have COPD, which is Chronic Obstructive Lung Disorder. So not the best of days for me.

I'm really sorry to hear your COPD diagnoses, it sounds like you're going through hell at the moment. I'm afraid I don't have any advice regarding your whitespot, I'm currently battling it in my own tank but thankfully we seem to be winning with the medication. Best of luck and I hope your fish pull through, it would be such a shame to have start all over again.

Thanks sussexgirl, I feel a bit calmer now, i think i will give it a few more days before i make any decision, and just keep on medicating the tank, at least there was only one dead fish today.

Hiya,

So sorry that it doesn't appear to be clearing up yet - what a nightmare you've been having.

When are you due to add day 6 dosage of the Protozin - today or tomorrow? Are you doing the full dosage or reduced? I know you've upped the temperature and left the lights off, so that's good. I know someone mentioned adding aquarium salt to the tank, but that would depend on the fish you've got in there (afraid I haven't got a clue about the Shrimps and Ich).

I would try to persevere and, if necessary, do another water change 24 hours after the medication period has finished, and then maybe continue it for another week to (hopefully) get on top of the problem.

Keep us posted, and if anyone's got any other ideas.....

Day six tomorrow (Friday) full dose. I did ask at LFS about salt , but the chap said not with soft water fish.Still as i have lost all the Cardinals it might be worth trying now.
