To be honest, I can't say what it is. I've never come across anything that looks like that in 17 years of fish husbandry. Anyone have a clue?

Looks like it could be mold growing on sap from cracks in the bark of wood that is not really driftwood-dry. But of course of lot of knowing whether wood is really dry is in the texture, so its hard to tell from a picture.

I have seen green wood look like that in a fire but have never seen that in a tank. Is you wood properly dried out?

i dont knw it came from a dead tree root in the backyard i cu

hit the wrong button it came from tree root i cut out the backyard it was dead so i brough it in and put it in bucket for a week then i got inpatient and put it in the tank with some weight to soak in the water its not turning the tank a different color either which is weriod i dont knw wut it is but my pleco just ate almost all of whatever it was and is still alive hmm wish i knew wut it was any more ideas

I don't know if there are any guidelines for "how dry" old dry wood needs to be but my impression has always been that the really safe stuff is so old that its long ago lost all its bark and that picture looks like a thin-bark type type tree limb that hasn't yet lost its bark. Its only a picture though, so I might be wrong.

Those are wonderful photos. If your sucker fish likes to eat that stuff then I wouldn't worry about it. My driftwood (Mopani and Sumatran) exuded a lot of white stuff that worried me at first (possibly sap) but my bristlenose plecos and otos love it so much that they eventually ate it all up.
