Hi,

I'm pretty new to the hobby and my tank has had fish in for about 5 weeks now, last saturday i noticed that both my blue rams were showing signs of White spot on their fins and body? i bought some anti white spot from my local store, after reading the instructions it seemed that the treatment was 2 doses. i removed the 2 carbon elements from my filter which is a Fluval U3, after adding the dose the water seemed to turn blue but after a few minutes it seemed to clear. all i did with the 2 carbon elements is place them in a sealed bag untill their ready to be put back in the tank. i'm not sure if this is the right thing to do??? should i buy new carbon elements and throw out the old or will they be ok to put back in??

Sorry, i know there seems to be alot about white spot and carbon on here already, but i'm not sure if what i'm doing is right???

Thanks.

Look in this forum for any post by a member called "oldman47" and look for the white spot link in his signature (bottom part of the post) - I forget where it takes you but its a good source of info for treating whitespot/ich.

You say the fish have been in the aquarium for 5 weeks. Was the filter "cycled" prior to that and if so how many weeks did it take to cycle?

That looks a lot like my ich link Bobtastic. I find that particular location very helpful in understanding what we are dealing with.

Thanks guys, i'll have a look at oldmans link. yes my tank was fully cycled before any fish were added.

I came home from partying this morning to find my Tiger Barb tank showing white dusting and some of the fish were flashing.

I'ld like to say thanks to you guys for posting this info, especially the link OldMan47, went straight out and bought Interpet Anti-White Spot and Aquarium Salt to get them treated asap. Hopefully, I have been able to stop it in it's tracks without any victims.

If you can nip it in the bud, you can almost be certain that you won't lose fish Spamtastic.

Mine seems to have cleared up and no fish have died, all the fish seem alot more lively now, especially the Rams. seems i caught it early!!

Thanks Guys.

Don't stop the treatment yet Tropic Thunder. One of the main points of that article is that you need to treat for several days after the fish show no more signs of the parasite. You still need to kill the free swimming stage of the last parasites that fell off the fish and they will be around a few days yet.
