what was he like when you bought him, did they give you any advice and were the water conditions much differant?

Bless him, maybe just lower the water level so he dosn't have to struggle so much to get to the top, i don't hold out much hope for him, sorry.

He was or rather looked perfectly healthy when I bought him, although the shop keeper did 'manhandle' him into the bag from the net

He lost a fraction of colour whilst on the journey home, and regained that after about an hour in the tank

He ate very well initially

Im using a Rekord 60 tank, and I have been a bit wary on the temp conditions, as they have fluctuated a little, and the thermostat doesnt appear to be on that much, and the water always felt a little colder than my other tanks

its currently running about 79 degrees, and tbh I have felt that the heater is a little underpowered as I belive it is only 50watt's but rarely seems to come on, despite altering the settings several times, the temp has rarely changed

I wasnt told anything about water temp, quality etc when I purchased him, other than told to keep him seperate from other fish, as he will eat them

Im sure I read the ideal environment for him when I got home, but I will have to try and dig it out again if I can, really as a guide, as it is pretty much all too late now

Never give up hope! but before you add fish, if it comes to that, make sure the tank is disinfected as white spot is a parasite so can attach itself again from the tank, keep us posted on how he is doing

Sadly he has just died :( :( :(

I was going to ask about the tank before restocking,

Would I be better doing a full strip down, and starting the tank off again from scratch, as it has only been running for about a month anyway?

Im not using an undergravel filter in it, and only a small layer of aquarium fine grade sand on the bottom of the tank

Thanks for the help everyone, including Wilder again :)

Steve

Sorry bless him he didn't look well at all, yes sterlise everything in the tank even the substrate and sponges, completely start again a fresh, R.I.P. little fellow.

Sorry to hear that he did look really ill :rip: i would start from scratch but what i would do is get the water paramiters the same as the pet store any good shop would be happy to give you this as it reduces stress on the fish. it was what i did when i first set up my tank. Hope you will have more look nxt time

Tank is stripped down now, and sand thrown away

Is it best to sterilise all the equipment with just boiling water, or is there something I can use that is safe

Steve

i've just been reading through this thread, i'm so sorry to hear of your loss. hopefully you will have more success next time. :byebye:

in response to your question about sterilising the tank, i have heard of ppl using the sterilising tablets that you use to sterilise baby bottles. i have also heard of ppl using a weak solution of bleach, i would imagine taht as long as you really thoroughly wash everthing away before even considering putting more fish in your tank it should be fine.

good luck for next time.. and dont give up!
:)

The filter put in a bucket of hot water and salt run it for a while in the water, then throw the water away and keep adding fresh water to the bucket to rinse it well, leave he tank and equipment a day to dry out, good luck.
