White Spot,is This The Right Way To Treat It.

Hi All.
I brought two kissing gouramies two weeks ago and I noticed last saturday that they
had got white spot,nothing else in the tank is affected.I went to my local lfs and
they reccomended waterlife protozin which I bought.
I turned my temp up to 30 and have followed the instructions on the bottle,ie treat for 1,2,3,days and again on the
sixth day,I did a 30% water change whilst gravel vaccing after the 3rd day.The gourarmies still have
some spots on the fins,If it does'nt clear up will I be able to treat again or would
you reccomend somthing else or have any tips,it's a 180 litre tank.

well my first step when I have illness is to diagnose the disease and determine who has it. If it is just one or two fish out of the tank, then I would quarentine them in a holding tank asap. Then I would begin the medication treatments. Keep watching the main tank as others may have the disease but may just not be showing the signs. sounds like your doing ok with treating the fish, but just a word too, do you have carbon in your filter right now? if you do, it will be absorbed almost right away and your basically just flushing your money away, as well as the fishes health.

This is a good case to show why it is smart to quarentine fish before adding them to an established tank as well

Make sure you don't have any carbon in the filters.
Increase aeration or surface turbulence to maximise the oxygen in the water.
Warmer water holds less oxygen than cooler water and medications reduce the oxygen carrying capabilities of the water.

Thanks for the reply,unfortunatly I do not have a spare tank,and my filter does not have carbon
in it just a couple of sponges.

Thanks Colin,I have turned my air pump up to the max,All the fish seem happy and active and
feeding well even the two kissers,I do not have carbon in my filter.

The total life cycle of ich is about 12 to 14 days, so any treatment regime should include dosing across at least two weeks. you need to continue dosing for at least 5-6 days after you see the last spot.

Protozin is a great med for whitespot. I use it personaly for protozoan issues, and work use it for all their protozoan infection treatments. Just remember not to waterchange untill the 6th day, as the first three days are slowly increasing the levels of one of the meds active ingrediants to its useful level. This component is hard on the fish, hense the slow build-up to prevent shocking the sick animals. I have never needed to retreat after one course covering a week, but yes, re-infection is possible at cooler temperatures. Keep the temp up and follow the instructions to the letter, and the ICH will be gone sooner then you know it

The sixth dose is supposidly a preventative

I did my water change on the forth day,so it looks like I may have to start
the treatment again if this does'nt clear it,when would it be safe to restart again
after the sixth day of the first dose?.

But I doubt it will speed up the whole life cycle to somewhere in the region of 6 days. As I said, treatments should be counted from the time you see the last spot rther than from when you start treating for better results.
