I noticed today that i have a layer of white slimy "stuff" on my mopani wood. anyone know what this is and is it harmful?? i assume its a type of algae.

It's probably a type of fungus, and no it is not harmful. Very common on new wood. If it is no a huge piece of wood lift it out, pour some boiling water on if and give it a quick scrub.

yup thats the stuff... its 3 big pieces of wood and was added to the tank yesterday... have taken it out and given it a scrub and is happy in the tank again thanks!

It may well continue to regrow until the free nutrients in the wood are used up, so don't be disheartened if it comes back, it can take a few weeks. Most shrimp will happily eat it.
