I have a 2 month fresh water setup that's just now going through it's nitrite spike phase, though we seem to be over the worst of it *fingers crossed*
However, I seem to have a white patchy, sometimes palid brownish/yellow algae that coats all my soft azoo decorations and any suction cups or molded tubing.
If left to build up, it eventually coats the glass very thinly. So far it has stained all my white azoo soft silicon corals an icky yellow colour that won't come clean. I haven't seen it growing on rocks, gravel or hard plastic like the filter.
It appears flakey, not hairy or fluffy. Grows as a thin biofilm, not as fluff or clumps. The platies seem to think it's so tasty, they will eat it rather then fight the danios at meal time.
Summary:2 month old tank, just getting over it's nitrite spike.
Fresh water, but a hardwater area.
Tempt 25 degress C.
Feeding: Once daily, sometimes once every other day depending on nitrite levels.
Problem: Flaky white thin biofilm on silicon plants, tubing and suction cups. Not on rocks or gravel.
No live plants.
I'd like to know what alage it is, and if a well matured tank will actually solve this problem once the levels have finished spiking. Or is this a hardwater algae problem that I could treat the water for?
